Nano Polarization Promises Brighter, More Efficient LCD Displays

Lisa Zyga of PhysOrg.com has posted a news article detailing an important LCD display technology advance.

Realizing that LCD light efficiency of 10% could be improved upon, scientists Sang Hoon Kim, Joo-Do Park and Ki-Dong Lee from Korea have developed a technique called “polarization recycling” to brighten LCD displays by recapturing lost light. The scientists achieved their success by inserting a nano-wire grid polarizer (a device known to reflect polarization) between the LCD panel and backlight. Kim, Park and Lee achieved LCD transmission above 90% but, noted a trade-off between transmission and contrast ratio.

Plasma screens have remained in the large television screen race due to their excellent brightness and color contrast. This development could lead to a further fall in market share.
