September 26, 2006LED illumination technologies for LCD and rear projection applications announced by Thomson and OSRAM Opto Semiconductors![]() Solid state light sources such as those manufactured by Philips Lumileds and Luminus Devices are a rapidly rising display technology. They have begun to replace incandescent bulbs in applications which suit their natural advantages including; durability, compactness, low heat production, and strong directionality Their importance has been acknowledged by awards such as Insight Media’s SID 2006 Best Buzz Award in the “Best New Backlight Technology” category. Thomson and OSRAM Opto Semiconductors are entering the market with their recent announcement that they are introducing LED illumination technologies for LCD and rear projection applications
PRESS RELEASE September 2006Thomson and OSRAM Opto Semiconductors introduce LED illumination technologies for LCD and rear projection applicationsOSRAM and Thomson produced both a rear projection television and 32″ LCD prototype, which was presented during IFA, the Consumer Electronics Trade Fair held in Berlin, September 2005. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has expertise in the area of ultra-high power semiconductor light sources and optics, whereas Thomson’s Technology division has core capabilities in advanced signal processing, illumination design, and power management to ensure the best picture quality. LED backlight with advanced signal processing for LCD:The 32″ prototype (with a luminance of 550 Cd/m2) features true color, low power consumption and slimline design. Advanced signal processing produces excellent picture quality, with optimal color correction and reduced motion blur. The LCD backlight is based on an arrangement of Golden Dragon light sources that enable high brightness in a slim design casing. The Golden Dragon light source contains chips of the latest thin film technology, with a lens uniquely developed by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. LED illumination technology for RPTV:The goal of the joint project is to produce a very efficient and compact illumination system for RPTV by combining the highly efficient OSTAR® light source from OSRAM with the compact illumination design and advanced signal processing developed by Thomson. This LED illumination technology will bring many advantages to rear projection TV, particularly in life time (5x over market light sources), enhanced picture quality and extreme low energy consumption.
