Upgradable, Custom Install Optoma BigVizion HDBV3100 DLP RPTV Review

Optima’s BigVizion line of large screen rear projection televisions comes in three sizes/models; the HDBV3100 (100-inch) , HDBV3090 (90-inch) and the HDBV3080 (80-inch).

Optoma BigVizion RPTV

The BigVizion RPTV’s are aimed at the professional installer market and can be either built-in or installed into a wall (only 30 inches depth required thanks to a 0.5X short-throw Fresnel lens). Typical installation scenarios might be corporate lobbies or boardrooms and the well financed home theatre enthusiast’s theatre. Interior designers will be impressed that the BigVizions have a customizable color scheme with an easy to change bezel color to match a customers’ décor. The units have a specification which allows them to be viewed in all lighting conditions.

The BigVizion line includes separate I/O and scaler modules which are sold separately as the Optima HD3000 Video Processor. The Optoma HD3000 is a professional video scaler and color management system powered by a Gennum’s GF9350 VXP technology image processor. A 25 foot cable allows considerable flexibility in positioning the HD3000 Video Processor.

Unique to the BigVizion range is their upgradeability. For instance, the light engine can be accessed from the front of the screen for updating the micodisplay chipset.

As they are advertised as native 1080p high definition, it is assumed that the 0.95 version of Texas Instruments DarkChip3 DMD microdisplay chip is being used. This chip has the highest fill ratio (smallest gap between micro-mirrors on DMD chip) of its family yet. The DarkChip3 is the latest DLP technology offering higher brightness and contrast then previous versions. The DarkChip3 DMD chip has the full two million and some micro-mirrors for the 2 megapixels required for 1080p high definition display (1920 x 1080). As the is a native 1080p projector, does not use Wobulation, or Smooth Picture if you use Texas Instruments terminology.

The DarkChip3 DMD is now controlled by dual drivers, Texas Instruments newly developed DDP3021. Used in parallel, the drivers provide precise control over the more numerous mirrors and enable 12-bit gamma processing (video signal deliberately distorted so that, after it has been distorted again by the display device, the viewer sees the correct brightness), resulting in the expression of image gradations that are four times richer. This allows the BigVizion range to display an astounding 68-plus billion colors on screen.

The Gennum GF9351 video processor with Visual Excellence Processing™ (VXP™) technology is capable of some 500 million floating point operations per second To quote from Gennum’s press release, “Using technologies such as TruMotionHD™ intelligent motion-adaptive de-interlacing and film cadence processing, and RealityExpansion™ 10-bit color processing, the GF9351 produces natural images uncompromised by jagged edges, noise and flickering frequently found in other video solutions.” The GF9351 will process high definition, 1920×1080 signals at full resolution transferring them at full resolution to the DMD.

The contrast ratio of 10,000:1 is impressive and should provide excellent definition even in the darkest scenes.

Optoma have aimed to further reduce the possibility of rainbow effects from the single chip design by using a six-segment color wheel spinning at a healthy 10,800 rpm.

The Optoma Big Vizion range supports ISFccc (Imaging Science Foundation Certified Calibration Configuration) Modes. ISFccc allows professional calibration technicians to store their settings and details and enable ISF day and night on screen modes. Owners can then simply choose between ISF modes for the best picture quality for the viewing conditions.
