November 17, 2006NuVision’s 52LEDLP 52 Inch LED DLP Rear Projection TV – ReviewOn November 10, Luminus Devices announced that “NuVision, a premium HDTV manufacturer that targets the CEDIA custom installation channel and high-end A/V specialty retailers, has begun shipping its 1080p Deep Black LED DLP television (model # 52LEDLP) with PhlatLight technology.” In the NuVision 52LEDLP, Luminus’s PhlatLight LED chipset, replaces the conventional color wheel and lamp assembly used by DLP systems.
The NuVision Deep Black LED DLP television, 52LEDLP, is the second PhlatLight LED utilizing television to be released this year. Samsung Electronics launched its HL-S5679W 56-inch LED Engine Widescreen DLP RPTVs several months ago. The HL-S5679W won the CNET Best of 2006 Award in the TV category. PhlatLight is a solid state light source - is a tri-color (red, green, blue) LED built as a single, large area monolithic chip. Luminus’s chip is (quoting Luminus) “designed expressly to meet the requirements of microdisplay illumination” such as the Texas Instruments 1080p microdisplay chip such as in the case of the NuVision 52LEDLP. NuVision’s specifications for the 52LEDLP state that an xHD4 DMD is used – a term used by numerous manufacturers to refer to the DLP microdisplay chip referred to by Texas Instruments as the 1080p. This chip is advertised as delivering native 1080p (1920 x 1080). Each TI 1080p microdisplay chip has a surface array of some 2.2 million microscopic mirrors (one per pixel) which swivel to reflect the light source as necessary to create the desired images for video playback.
The NuVision 52LEDLP benefits in a number of significant ways from using The PhlatLight (LED) solid state light source: elimination of rainbow effects - elimination of the conventional DLP system rotating color wheel also removes the possibility of motion blur or the associated “rainbow” artifacts. deeper blacks - Unlike conventional arc lamp (UHP) light sources, LEDs can be turned off to deliver a deeper blacks and greater detail in dark areas of the picture. NuVision’s Digital Switching Deep Black (DSDB) control system utilizes this benefit. high contrast – NuVision’s DSDB control system combined with the LED performance delivers an impressive 5000+:1 contrast ratio greater efficiency - The high efficiency of solid state light sources means less power consumption than conventional large screen The NuVision 52LEDLP is advertised as consuming only 200W of power. increased lamp life - Luminus rate their PhlatLights as having a 60,000 hour life – significantly higher than the 3-6,000 for conventional UHP lamps. It is interesting to note that Samsung advertise their HL-S5679W as having a LED life of 20,000 hours despite using the same Luminus PhlatLight technology. no lamp brightness degradation - The LED light source is also not subject to the in-service light output degradation of conventional UHP lamps. faster start up times - NuVision advertise a short 4 second start time – an end to the lamp warm-up delay. larger color gamut - Solid state lighting allows Nuvision’s 52LEDLP to reproduce 140% of the HD color spectrum (65% more than typical flat-panel display technology) exceeding the NTSC REC 709 HDTV standard. environmentally friendly - PhlatLight solid state light sources are free of mercury or other hazardous materials commonly found in conventional mercury-vapor UHP. less noise - With a more efficient (less heat produced) light source and the elimination of the color wheel assembly the NuVision 52LEDLP is a quiet television. Sound SystemAs expected of a television advertised as a premium product, NuVision have provided an above average audio package. The audio system is provided by SRS Lab’s patented SRS TruSurround XT surround sound technology. TruSurround XT is a multichannel virtualization technology which aims to produce a surround sound effect using only two speakers. It will handle up to seven (6.1) audio channels. TruSurround XT combines three patented sound processing techniques from SRS Labs:
TruSurround will produce a two channel stereo output from mono, stereo, or multichannel input signals. It is compatible with signals that been decoded by a Dolby Pro Logic or Pro Logic II decoder and signals that have been encoded to stereo with a matrix encoder (e.g. SRS Circle Surround or Dolby Pro Logic).
