BenQ’s New MP510 Multi-function DLP Projector Review

BenQ advertise the new MP510 as a general purpose projector suitable for home and business applications. It utilizes Texas Instruments’ DLP (Digital Light Processing) microdisplay technology.

BenQ MP510 Portable DLP Projector

With a brightness of 1,500 ANSI lumens and contrast ratio of 2,000:1 the projector should be comfortable in business settings where there is a fair amount of ambient light. Native resolution is SVGA (800 x 600) although the unit has resolution support up to 1280 x 1024.

BenQ do a good job with their baffled cooling system and in this case deliver a 24dB sound level which is whisper quiet for a home theatre situation.

Handy features are auto-off, seven quick-set picture modes, color adjustment (instant optimized settings for brightness, color saturation and contrast according to up to five different wall colors) and even a presentation timer.

The BenQ MP510 is rated as having a lamp life of 3,000 hours, which is reasonable but not world beating in comparison to similar projectors.

Portability

With a weight of 2.6 kg (5.7 lbs) and smallish dimensions of 10.9x 3.74 x 8.19 inches (277 x 95 x 208 mm) the BenQ MP510 can definitely be considered portable. With a throw distance range from 1 to 8 m and digital keystone correction there is considerable flexibility for set-up. At the price BenQ is offering the MP510, lens shift is not included. With this unit one can project an image from 30 to 200 inches in size.

Input Terminals

  • Analog RGB: D-sub 15 pin x 1
  • Component Video: D-sub 15 pin (Shared with Analog RGB connector)
  • S-Video: Mini Din 4 pin x 1
  • Composite Video: RCA x 1

Mitsubishi offer the PK-20 DLP PocketProjector which has interesting features in comparison to the BenQ MP510. It has 10,000 hour life LED lighting, weighs only 1lb (450g) and has lightening quick start and stop times.

Mitsubishi also offers another DLP portable (just) projector in the XD435U-G projector with a higher specification which will also handle educational tasks.
