There are a number of important things to look for in a portable digital projector for meetings on the go. Your specification shopping list should include factors such as:
- Horizontal and Vertical Lens Shift or Keystone Correction – to correct keystoning of the projected image when the projection screen is either not at the same height as the projector and/or horizontally in line / skewed – lens shift is preferred as there is no possibility of introducing artifacts from digital keystone correction
- High Brightness – look for over 2,000 ANSI lumens to cope with less than perfect projection situations with plenty of ambient light (eg. training rooms), 1,500 ANSI – 2,000 ANSI lumens projectors can handle a reasonable about of ambient light.
- High Contrast Ratio – something of the order of 400:1 or over will produce acceptable results but, see if you can get higher if possible as contrast ratio is a important factor in image quality
- Set-up Speed – look for a projector with some quick application select modes which match the type of presentation material and projection scenarios which are likely
- Higher Zoom Ratio – the higher the zoom ratio, the more flexibility you have in the distance from projector to the screen to produce a certain size projected image.
- Low Noise Level – you don’t want your voice to be competing with projector noise – a noise level in the 20 – 30 dB (whisper quiet) should be achievable
- No filter – Some projectors do not need filter changes. It’s a time saver if available and ensures your projector lamp lasts longer.
- Sturdy Build – to protect the projector from dust and tolerate knocks during transport – look for shutters, caps and lack of protruding controls
- Quick Shut Down (cooling cycle) – will allow you to make a quick getaway if necessary otherwise you could be delayed waiting for the projection lamp to cool (you don’t want a broken lamp costing hundreds of dollars)
- Simple Remote Control – the remote needs to be a convenient size, easy to use with suitably large buttons and backlit if possible
- Password Lock – protects your business data by blocking access through a login.
- Personalized Start-up Image – some projectors have the facility to allow you to display your company logo for a professional touch
- USB Loading of Presentations – look for the facility to load your presentation with a portable USB storage drive without the need for a PC
- Portable Weight – a projector needs to be under 6 lb (2.7kg) to be considered as portable
- Small Size – smaller dimensioned projectors are easier to carry
- Carry Bag – you need a protective carry bag which gives some protection to the projector and has pockets to stow the remote, cables, power cord etc.
