JVC’s DLA-RS1 1080p HD Home Theatre Projector Review

The DLA-RS1 High Definition, 1920 x 1080p, home theatre projector is part of JVC’s Reference Series intended for the up-market home theatre installations.

JVC DLA-RS1 Projector

The JVC DLA-RSI incorporates JVC’s D-ILA (Direct Drive Image Light Amplifier) chip technology could be considered as an evolutionary development of LCoS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon) technology. JVC’s D-ILA technology competes with Sony’s SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) and Syntax-Brillian’s Gen II LCoS.

Apart from the excellent D-ILA display technology and full 1080p high definition resolution, the DLA-RS1 boasts a very high contrast ratio, has features which contribute to significant set-up flexibility and accepts a wide range of HD signals through a good range of input connections.

D-ILA Chip Technology in a 3 Microdisplay Panel Design

The DLA-RS1 incorporates a 3 microdisplay panel design which eliminates the color separation and “rainbow” effects found in competing technologies eg. DLP. Each of the three 0.7 inch D-ILA chips has the full 1920 x 1080 resolution allowing the projector to fully display a full HD 1080p signal without scaling. JVC’s newly developed 0.7-inch full HD D-ILA device exhibits a significant reduction in stray light caused by the dispersion and diffraction of reflected light.

LCoS, upon which JVC D-ILA is based, is a combination of both the reflective approach of DLP (millions of actuated micro-mirrors on a chip reflect light required for the display) and the transmissive approach of LCD (millions of liquid crystals act as valves passing through light required for the display). In LCoS, liquid crystals are applied to a reflective mirror substrate with the polarization of liquid crystals being used for light transmission control and the mirror below reflecting the light or not as required for image display. LCOS microdisplays are mostly of a three-chip configuration for the three primary colors. As with DLP microdisplays, LCoS relies on projecting the three primary colors rapidly enough so that the eye combines them into a single color.

D-ILA eliminates the “screen door effect”, which hinders LCD technologies, offering a high aperture ratio of more than 90 percent to ensure smooth, film-like images.

Huge Contrast Ratio

JVC has managed to produce a projection engine which achieves a previously unattainable native 15,000:1 contrast ratio.

Installation Flexibility

The DLA-RS1 projector has a brightness of 800 lumens which is suitable for a home theatre installation. The noise level of 27dB is suitably quiet for such an intallation.

The DLA-RS1 shines in regard to installation flexibility with horizontal lens shift of 80% vertical and 34% horizontal being provided.. The manual 2x zoom lens with a range of 1.4 - 2.8:1 adds flexibility in distance from the projection screen.

Audio Visual Connections

The DLA-RS1 is equipped with two HDMI input and will accept full HD 1080p signals provided by Blu Ray and HD-DVD players. Component, composite, and S-Video inputs are also provided. The DLA-RS1 can be controlled by computer or home theater automation controller via a RS-232 port.

Input signals accepted -

Input signals (analog) 480i/p, 576i/p, 720p60/50, 1080i 60/50

Input signals (digital) 480i/p, 576i/p, 720p60/50, 1080i 60/50, 1080 24p/60p/50p
