HP PL5060N 50 inch High Definition Plasma TV

The HP PL5060N Plasma HDTV has a resolution of 1366 x 768 with an excellent contrast (as expected of a Plasma TV) of “up to 10000” to quote HP. Brightness is also very satisfactory at 1000 nits. It is an attractive looking unit with a metallic black design. You can detach the stand if you want to wall mount it.

The PL5060N has a smaller 42 inch sibling, the HP PL4260N. The only significant differences in the HP PL4260N are screen size, resolution (1024 x 768) and a slightly higher brightness of 1,200 nits.

The HP PL5060N has and integrated Digital HDTV/Analog tuner (ATSC/NTSC/Clear-QAM) allowing viewing of high definition video from cable or off-air sources.

Video Processing

The video processing engine offers dynamic contrast adjustment which adjusts picture quality on a scene-by-scene basis. There is also a 3D color enrichment system to produce true-to-life flesh tones and vivid colors. HP has also included Sharpness Enhancement algorithms and Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing which detects and compensates for motion in pictures, reducing any contouring and visual noise without affecting picture detail. HP SLC3760N MediaSmart 37 inch LCD HDTV Review

HP’s SLC3760N MediaSmart TV is a 37 inch, 720p (1366 x 769 pixels), LCD, high definition television. As with its sibling models the LC3260N and LC3760N, the SLC3760N’s brightness of 450 cd/m² (nits) is more than adequate for a typical home viewing situation as is the contrast of 1200:1. Many manufacturers have been producing silver colored products but, HP has shown with the SLC3760N how attractive an all-matte-black finish can be.

As with their rear projection televisions, HP have developed their LCD range independently and one area they have put considerable thought into video processing with a digital comb filter, video noise reduction, fine detail enhancement, auto contrast optimization, advanced color management, ambient light adaptation control, film mode processing (3:2 Pull Down).

Why Choose an Integrated Networked Media Smart Television?

With the SLC3760N HPs has built a Digital Media Adapter (DMA) into a 37 inch flat panel LCD television to provide a computer network link. One might wonder why they would do this when linking a flat panel LCD to a stand-alone DMA such as an Acoustic Research Digital MediaBridge or the D-Link DSM-520 can achieve a networked media system with similar functionalities. The answer is probably four-fold; (read more..)

Plastic Logic to Manufacture Flexible Plastic Displays

Plastic Logic will be the first company to manufacture plastic electronics on a commercial scale. Plastic Logic are confident that their radically simple process of printing plastic electronic circuits will dramatically transform the nature of the world’s electronics industry. Their production process has attributes allowing large area, high volume and low cost production of plastic electronic circuits. Independent experts from IDTechEx forecast plastic electronics will be a $30 billion industry by 2015, and could reach as much as $250 billion by 2025.

Plastic Logic Flexible E-Paper Display

Finance market confidence in their plastic electronics technology has allowed Plastic Logic to raise $100m of equity finance to build a plastic electronics production facility. The company’s initial target is what they believe is a market opportunity for flexible active-matrix displays for ‘take anywhere, read anywhere’ electronic reader products. It will utilize Plastic Logic’s unique manufacturing process to fabricate active-matrix backplanes on plastic substrates which, when combined with an electronic-paper frontplane material, will be used to create display modules that are thin, light and robust. They will provide a digital reading experience very close to that of reading paper.

Dresden in the ‘Silicon Saxony’ region of eastern Germany has been chosen as the factory location. It is scheduled to begin production of display modules in 2008.

Plastic Electronic Production

The driving advantage pushing the adoption of plastic electronics is the simplicity of its printing-like process compared to conventional amorphous silicon based processes. It also uses standard production equipment from the display manufacturing and other industries. (read more..)

Dell 3400MP Portable Projector

The Dell 3400MP is a DLP projector with native XGA resolution (1024 x 768) well designed for its purpose of making light work of mobile presentations. It hits most of the targets outlined in PTek’s recent guide Fifteen Tips for Selecting a Portable Digital Projector.

Dell 3400MP Portable Projector

Portability

As a light weight of only 2.40 lbs (1.09 kg) and what could be described as micro size dimensions of 8.0 x 6.0 x 2.9 inches (204 x 154 x 73.7 mm) the Dell 3400MP projector certainly falls solidly into the portable or mobile projector camp. To further improve its portability Dell provide a hard shell exterior, hard foam lined, drop tested carrying case which closely envelopes the projector, remote and cables in conveniently sized protective package. Coming out of the case the 3400MP certainly conveys professionalism with its matt dark silver casing and glossy black control panel studded with blue LEDs.

Mobile Projection Suitability

With a well rated 2150 ANSI lumens of brightness, the Dell 3400MP is suitable for most meeting or training rooms likely to be encountered negating the need to worry about excessive ambient light washing out the presentation. At 2100:1 contrast ratio the displayed images should also look sharp in this type of viewing environment.

The projector has reasonable set up flexibility with a wide projection distance range from 1.5 – 12m attributable to its built-in zoom lens suitable for most viewing environments encountered. Projector angle adjustment is not as flexible with lens shift not provided and only vertical Keystone correction provided. This introduces the possibility of some nuisance artifacts being introduced by the digital correction process.

The well featured, pointing laser equipped, remote control provided frees the presenter from remaining with the projector during a presentation.

With a shut down cycle that takes a couple of minutes it falls short of the speed of other mobile projector offerings. (read more..)

Philips HTS6510 DVD Home Theatre System Incorporating SonoWave Sound Technology

Many flat screen television manufacturers have been using advanced audio technology such as that supplied by SRS Labs to provide a richer immersive audio experience with only two speakers. Rather then go this route Philips through Philips

Philips HTS6500

Applied Technologies has invested in their own “SonoWave” technology for creating the illusion of a surround sound system with only two speakers.SonoWave has been developed as the new HTS6510 DVD Home Theatre System for delivering 5.1 channel audio through two speakers. It has also been licensed to OEM partner equipment manufacturer, Yamaha and is being marketed as “Air Technology”.

How SonoWave Works

Like a 5.1 audio system a SonoWave Home Theater System has five amplifiers. However, it uses only two front speakers - each with three drivers. For those not able to carry out a neater permanent installation and not wanting speakers and trailing wires scattered around the room, this may be an attractive option.

As with a conventional 5.1 home theater system, center channels and front channels are fed to drivers pointing directly at the listener, providing direct sound. Surround channels are fed to the outer drivers which are at an angle pointing them away from the listener aiming for the perception of only indirect and diffused sound.

To avoid mixing of front and surround sound beams the SonoWave system uses array processing techniques to control the sound coming from the speakers and cut “notches” in the speakers sound beams. A notch is an area where the level of direct sound from the speaker is very low.

Using only the three drivers, a notch is created in the surround sound channel beams projected towards the listener, who then only hears the diffused sound field induced in the room. As a direct result, the surround channels embrace the listener. In the front channel, a notch is created in the beams projected towards the side of the room, whilst the listener hears the direct sound from the loudspeaker array. This arrangement avoids mixing of front and surround sound channels creating a sound field like that provided by a 5.1 surround sound system. (read more..)
