February 5, 2007Review of JVC True 1080p HD-ILA Rear Projection TV FN Series - HD-56FN97, HD-61FN97 and HD-70FN97The FH series of JVC’s True 1080p HD-ILS rear projection TV (RPTV) is based on LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) technology developed by JVC which is know for its close pixel spacing and delivering a bright, smooth image. The FN series RPTV are available in 56 (HD-56FN97FH) , 61 (HD-61FN97) and 70 inch (HD-70FN97) screen sizes. D-ILA Technology - 3 Microdisplay Panel Design
The FN series HD-ILA RPTV incorporate a 3 microdisplay panel design which eliminates the color separation and “rainbow” effects found in competing technologies eg. DLP. Each of the three 0.7 inch D-ILA chips has the full 1920 x 1080 resolution allowing the projector to fully display a full HD 1080p signal without scaling. JVC’s newly developed 0.7-inch full HD D-ILA device exhibits a significant reduction in stray light caused by the dispersion and diffraction of reflected light. LCoS, upon which JVC D-ILA is based, is a combination of both the reflective approach of DLP (millions of actuated micro-mirrors on a chip reflect light required for the display) and the transmissive approach of LCD (millions of liquid crystals act as valves passing through light required for the display). In LCoS, liquid crystals are applied to a reflective mirror substrate with the polarization of liquid crystals being used for light transmission control and the mirror below reflecting the light or not as required for image display. LCOS microdisplays are mostly of a three-chip configuration for the three primary colors. D-ILA eliminates the “screen door effect”, which hinders LCD technologies, offering a high aperture ratio of more than 90 percent to ensure smooth, film-like images. JVC’s D-ILA technology competes with Sony’s SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) and Syntax-Brillian’s Gen II LCoS. Contrast RatioJVC tout their new Advanced Super Cinema Mode as producing outstanding image quality by responding to scene content to provide optimum black levels and accurate gradation in dark scenes. This scene by scene optimization approach seems to have been adopted by all manufacturers for boosting contrast ratio figures. Video ProcessingJVC have incorporated a powerful video processor in their Genessa 32-bit CPU video processing, incorporating the fifth generation of JVC’s D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology). D.I.S.T. seamlessly up-scales any video source to display at full high definition 1080p. D.I.S.T. also includes a Digital Noise Suppressor that detects and eliminates “block noise”, a Mosquito Noise Suppressor that eliminates noise without degrading the image, and a 3D Y/C comb filter with DTV Cross Color Eliminator that uses an advanced 10-bit 3D Y/C separation process to eliminate cross color and dot interference that is imbedded in older video sources. Standard definition signals are improved through better IP conversion, improved scaler performance and a new PLL system that improves the performance of a composite signal. AudioJVC have boosted the audio performance of new HD-ILA RPTVs by using MaxxBass digital signal processing to extend the perceived bass performance. MaxxBass maximizes bass by adding a series of harmonics to the signal. The harmonics stimulate a psychoacoustic bass-enhancing effect. Bass frequencies are greatly enhanced without traditional EQ or bass compression. The FN RPTV series also have a built-in parametric equalizer for more accurate frequency response. ConnectionsThe FN series HD-ILA RPTV each have a good range of available connection options including two HDMI inputs. Other True 1080p HD-ILA SeriesThe FN series features a silver cabinet with black bezel. There is also an FH series which feature a black cabinet and bezel. There are some other specification differences with JVC’s FH series having the following extra features available.
In addition to the FN and FH series, there are three other HD-ILA RPTV sold by JVC including the HD-52FA97, HD-56FB97 and HD-61FB97.
