February 6, 2007BenQ MP610 Home and Business DLP Projector ReviewThe BenQ MP610 projector is well priced projector delivering 2000 ANSI lumens of brightness making it suitable for business use where there is more ambient light than the typical home projection situation. BenQ have also added other features which enhance the projectors business usefulness.
The MP610 utilizes Texas Instruments’ DLP (Digital Light Processing) microdisplay technology. Native resolution is SVGA (800 x 600) although the unit has resolution support up to 1080i. The projector has a single DLP microdisplay chip and therefore has a color wheel. In this case BenQ have employed their “golden ratio” color wheel which has 5 segments to balance color saturation and maximize color accuracy with the original input signal. A color wheel adds to projector noise but, BenQ has done a good job with their baffled cooling system and in this case delivers a 25dB sound level which is whisper quiet. With this unit one can project an image from 31 to 300 inches in size. Of course image brightness on the screen depends on the ambient light levels and the projector positioning. The BenQ MP610 has a fairly reasonable lamp life of 4,000 hours. Contrast RatioThe quoted contrast ratio is 2000:1 however, the testing method was not stated. Full On/ Full Off tests deliver higher test results than the ANSI test. However, the figure is satisfyingly high and matches what would be expected of a projector which can be used in well illuminated environments. PortabilityFor a projector being purchased for business its portability should be consided. With a weight of 6 lbs (2.72 kg) and smallish dimensions of 8.58 x 6.77 x 2.4 inches the BenQ MP610 can be considered portable. Business UseBenQ have included a number of features which will make the life of a presenter a little easier. Presenters should be noted that the projector is both PC and Mac compatible. Digital keystone correction Digital keystone correction provides flexibility for projector set-up. Although, digital keystone correction is prone to introducing unwanted artifacts into the projected image. At the price BenQ is offering the MP610, lens shift is not included. Quick Cooling With the Quick Cooling function the projector cooling time has been reduced by 60% with the presenter is free to leave quickly if another appointment time is closing in. Auto Off The BenQ MP610 shuts off automatically when it detects no input sources for a period of time. This functionality saves power and eliminates the risk of projector overheating. Front Ventilation Design Light leakage and hot air exhaust from a rear projector ventilation duct can be annoying and distracting for an audience so BenQ have designed the MP610 with a front vent design. Password Protection Function To provide some security when using the BenQ MP610 in an insecure environment it has been equipped with a password function that prevents unauthorized use and deters theft. High Altitude Mode For those who live or have to travel to high altitude or high temperature environments, there can be some comfort knowing that the projectors thermal cooling system has 2 sets of cooling fans for the lamp and the Texas Instruments DMD chip to ensure reliable operation. 9 Application Modes For quick customization of setting for various applications the BenQ MP610 has 9 unique built-in application modes. Application modes are for PC signal input (Brightest, Presentation, Photo, Gaming and Video) and video signal input (Movie, Cinema, Gaming and Photo). Related BenQ Projector ModelsThe BenQ MP610 is part of BenQ’s “Multimedia” line of projectors. The series progresses from the lowest specification (and cost) BenQ Model MP510 to the MP611c , the MP620p and the MP720p. The main differences are in the resolution, brightness.
