April 30, 2007Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) or HDMI-CEC allows Global Remote Control of AV SystemsWe all like things to be simple. Even a basic task like loading a DVD into a DVD players tray requires multiple remotes and key pressing before the TV is on, the correct video source selected and appropriate video and audio modes enabled. A little know facility of HDMI, Consumer Electronics Control (CEC), can provide a vastly simplified global level of remote control. Getting a DVD up and playing can be as simple as a single button press. With its roots coming from the SCART interface, the HDMI-CEC allows up to ten AV devices to discover and communicate with one another over a HDMI connected system. Around since HDMI version 1, HDMI-CEC was updated with version 1.3 of HDMI with the addition of timer and audio commands. CEC consists of a single wire bus within standard HDMI cabling. It is mandatory to have the CEC cabling but, not to implement it. However, with CEC compliance test equipment having become available recently, audio visual manufacturers are moving to implement CEC in their consumer products. HDMI-CEC also allows for global commands with individual CEC enabled AV devices able to command and control each other without user intervention. In the case of loading a DVD, closing the DVD tray could trigger the DVD player to command the TV to switch on, select the DVD player HDMI cable as the video source and set the appropriate video and audio modes for playback. So remember, if you want a CEC functional system make sure the audio visual device you are purchasing is compliant as it is optional and not all manufacturers have implemented it. April 24, 2007Samsung LN-T5265F 52 inch Flat Panel LCD 1080p Television with included HDTV Tuner – ReviewSamsung is in a good position having captured the number one market share position for digital TVs in the USA in 2006. Samsung markets the four most important digital TV technologies - LCD, Rear Projection, Plasma, and Flat Tube.

April 23, 2007Hitachi - Matsushita 30 inch OLED TelevisionAlready having developed a 21 inch OLED display prototype, Toshiba and Matsushita have now announced that they will release via their joint venture, Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Company, an OLED television, probably 30 inch, by 2009. Some Quick facts on OLED displays
Some of the lifetime issues of OLED organic material seem to have been resolved with discoveries like that of blue PHOLED which has a 20,000 hour lifetime. However, displays will have to be well sealed or protected otherwise as moisture can damage organic display materials. It seems that Toshiba and Matsushita are being realistic about the difficulties of bringing a new technology to the consumer market. ToshibaToshiba’s President and CEO Atsutoshi Nishida has commented that, “We don’t expect that the organic EL can compete from the beginning on the equal footing with the LCD TV, which is released from many manufacturers across the world, but we believe its superiority will be recognized as production volume rises.” Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Company won’t be alone in bringing OLED technology to the television market as Sony has already manufactured OLED display prototypes and is also developing OLED displays for televisions. April 16, 2007Breakthrough Magneto Photonic Crystal Microdisplay for Flat Panel TVsIt sounds too good to be true - a large flat panel display technology which is; comparatively simple to manufacture, has a switching speed thousands to millions of times faster, improved gray levels and brilliant colors. But, true it is. Panorama Labs Pty. Ltd. from Perth, Western Australia is the company has developed just such a technology. The technology is a product of the company’s research, development and commercialization of breakthroughs in magneto-photonic technologies. Panorama Lab’s Magneto Photonic Crystal (MPC) technology for flat panel displays integrates magneto-photonics and nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is the manipulation of materials in the 100 nanometer range. To appreciate the scale, compare it to the width of a human hair at about 50,000 nanometers. In the simplest terms, MPC involves polarized colored light from a laser passing through a Magneto Photonic Crystal. The polarization of the light is rotated by an amount proportional to a controlling magnetic coil embedded in the MPC block. The rotated beam of polarized light then passes through a laser polarizer. As the amount of light which can pass through the polarizer depends on its angle of polarization, the magnetic coil is in fact controlling light throughput like a throttle. According to Panorama an MPC block is capable of:
Panorama is expecting very high resolutions of the order of 4,000 x 2,000 to be possible using MPC. MPC technology sounds set to take on the higher resolution standards 1440p and 2160p sometime in the near future. Better yet - there doesn’t appear to be a screen size limit to the technology. April 10, 2007Cognitive Load Theory Questions Educators Use of PowerPointAccording to John Sweller, of the University of New South Wales School of Education, we are being taught the wrong way as teaching methods do not take into account the way in which we think and learn. The basis for John Sweller’s assertion is his Cognitive Load Theory which was the subject of a recent, March 2007, international conference in Sydney, Australia. The central premise of the theory is the limitations of the brain’s temporary storage of information necessary to perform complex cognitive tasks such as language, mathematics, learning and reasoning. Working memory, which utilizes our limited temporary storage, is limited when we are learning new information. Learning and solving problems require different cognitive process which compete for temporary storage. Similarly, visual and auditory processing require different cognitive processing. Splitting a students attention between verbalized and PowerPoint presentations of the same content overtaxes short term memory - hindering learning. Mr Sweller believes that teachers are better off giving students solved problems so they have the learning to take home. Once information is in long-term memory, it can be brought back to working memory in very large amounts. The take home message is that teaching content and style, including integration of PowerPoint presentations, should be tailored to take account of the brains processing limitations in order to make it much easier to understand.
