May 24, 2007JVC Clear Motion Drive II (CMD) 1080p HD LCDs LT-47X898, LT-42X898 and LT-37X898JVC will introduce its second generation Clear Motion Drive (CMD) this fall with its new High Speed 2 LCD line comprising the 47 inch LT-47X898, the 42 inch LT-42X898 and the 37inch LT-37X898. The new LCDs will also introduce three HDMI interfaces each to the new HDMI standard 1.3.
Like the first generation of CMD, JVC’s Clear Motion Drive II will have a 120Hz refresh rate (double typical) however, it has been designed specifically for full HD (1920 x1080 pixels) as opposed to 720p for the first generation introduced . The technology needs a significant video processing capability as to reduce blurring of moving images, it uses a frame doubling driver and motion interpolation. When it detects motion in images the JVC CMD II doubles the frame rate inserting an interpolated frame between originals giving a smoother progression and reducing blurring. JVC claim that the interpolated frame maintains image brightness. The first generation Clear Motion Drive only detected horizontal motion. CMD II detects image data from more than 8,000 dots in a frame to create a pixel and calculate the movement from one frame to the next. This process is repeated for all two million pixels in a frame (19.2 trillion dots evaluated per second) to interpolate movement in any direction. To confirm improvement of moving images with CMD, JVC used measured the Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT) which is designed to quantify the visual perception of moving images across an LCD screen. Their research showed that MPRT was significantly higher (less blurring) at 120Hz than 60Hz. Another improvement for the new LCD panels to release is the use of JVC’s fifth generation D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology) engine on the JVC-exclusive 32-bit Genessa chip. The 10 bit video processing is optimized for more natural shades of grey compared than the previous 8 bit model. With the new DIST engine the reproducible color gamut is 102 percent based on the NTSC standard – well beyond the typical.
