JVC’s new 688 (LT-42X688 and LT-37X688) and 788 (LT-47X788 and LT-42X788) series LCD televisions all have full, 1080p, HD resolution (1920 x 1080). The 788 series has higher performance with 1500:1 vs 1300:1 contrast ratio and 4.5ms vs 5ms response time. The different series can be identified by the 688 series black cabinets and the 788 series black with silver trim cabinets.

Standout features of these LCD televisions are the video processing power of JVC’s Genessa chip (noise reduction), gamma control, a universal remote, above average sound system and the very handy USB photo viewer.

Genessa chip

JVC’s Genessa chip, a 32-bit CPU processor, provides all image processing, noise reduction and color management technologies. From every source, D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology), onboard the GENESSA chip detects and up-scales the data (SD and HD) to display at full HD 1080p resolution.

Noise Reduction

High Definition TV magnifies and picture distortions making noise reduction an important factor in producing a good picture. JVC have worked hard on producing a comprehensive noise reduction suite of technologies.

• Digital Video Noise Reduction detects and stabilizes digital video noise to reduce any graininess.
• A 3D Y/C Digital Comb Filter w/Cross Color Eliminator detects and reduces embedded dot and color interference from digital broadcast and component signals for crystal clear images.
• Natural Progressive Technology is an I/P scaling technology that smooths images. It focuses on areas that normally blur, such as where there is fast movement or skewed lines exist, so images are always smooth.
• Natural Cinema (3-2 Pull Down) Technology is an edge smoothing circuit that samples and compensates for the jagged edges commonly found in videos that were converted from film.

Gamma Control

Another video processing technology JVC have on their GENESSA chip is their Motion Adaptive Dynamic Gamma algorithm. This algorithm detects areas of darker data, even in motion, and preserves the tonal details and gradations with those areas so that they remain rich with detail and never appear muddied.

5 Point Color Management System

JVC’s 5 Point Color Management System algorithm compensates for potential color range limitations with a pin-point sampling process that tells the GENESSA chip which colors need to be softened and which colors toned down. It anticipates which colors typically interfere with others and proactively preventing them from doing so.

USB Photo Viewer

The USB photo viewer is a very handy tool for getting a large view of your image files. The photo viewer is a USB input for a USB drive. The inbuilt photo viewing software allows images to be zoomed and rotated, viewed individually or played as a slide show.

Universal Remote

In an enlightened approach to their illuminated remote control, JVC have made it a universal remote that can be programmed to operate other brands AV equipment such as DVD players and digital video recorders. Dual infrared transmitters mean that you can send signals to the TV while holding the remote in a vertical position to better see the control buttons.

Connections

A good range of connection options are provided including two HDMI v1.3 inputs, two component inputs, three composite inputs, three AV inputs, an S-Video input, and optical digital audio out, and a fixed audio out.

Audio

Features of JVC’s audio package include:

• 20W total audio power - 10-watts-per-channel amplifier
• A.H.S. (Advanced Hyper Surround) creates the illusion of a 3D soundfield without the need for a separate surround sound system
• Smart Sound - maintains a constant volume level between program changes

Preset Modes

The JVC LCD’s have four picture modes (standard, game, theater and dynamic) to provide quick select optimization for different viewing environments and video sources.

There are nine preset video aspect modes to find the best presentation mode for a particular video source: Full Native HD, Cinema Zoom, Panorama Zoom, Full HD, Slim, Cinema, Panorama, Full and Regular modes.

JVC also have an Clear Motion Drive range of LCD televisions which incorporate JVC’s latest Clear Motion Drive II technology. When it detects motion in images the JVC CMD II doubles the frame rate inserting an interpolated frame between originals giving a smoother progression and reduced blurring.
