Optoma DV11 Digital DVD Home Theater Projector Review

Optima actually call the DV11 a “movie time” projector as they have designed it for consumers who don’t have a dedicated home theater and want to set up the projector for a movie night or sporting event. Hence, the inbuilt DVD player to simplify set up by eliminating the need for connecting a separate DVD player. With 1600 ANSI lumens of brightness, Optoma have recognized that brightness levels are most likely to be higher for a room which is not a purpose built home theater. The contrast ratio is a suitably high 2200:1.

For showing digital images to friends and family the DVD player will load a Kodak Picture CD and display JPEG files. It will even play audio CDs, MP3 and WMA files however, the usefulness of this is not readily apparent. Optoma have included somewhat more powerful than usual built in speakers (5W) however, most audiences, would appreciate larger external speakers (home stereo system) which can be connected using the included digital audio S/PDIF output.

ProjectionDesign evo2sx+ DLP Portable Business Projector

The evo2sx+ is a DLP projector by Norwegian projection specialist ProjectionDesign which has been manufacturing projectors since the 1980’s. The evo2sx+ has an uncommon, higher SXGA+ resolution (1400 x 1050 pixels) compared to the more common XGA (1024 × 768) monitor resolution of business projectors. The SXGA+ resolution has almost double the workspace of regular XGA making it suitable for applications beyond PowerPoint presentations such as displaying CAD/CAM images and detailed graphical designs from video sources including normal monitors right through to graphics workstations.

With a brightness of 2500 ANSI lumens the evo2sx+ will cut through a lot of ambient light to project a bright image. Contrast is also high at 2500:1. The evo2sx+ has a high end specification with a Texas Instruments DLP DarkChip 3 DMD and a Faroudja video processing chip. Toshiba TDP-ET20U Multimedia DVD Projector Review

Toshiba advertise that the TDP-ET20U is both a home theater and business projector. However, its specifications do not match this dual role expectation. With it’s sleek, black piano finish casing, the Toshiba TDP-ET20U looks more like a home theater projector than a business projector. An attractive feature for the home theater purchaser will most likely be the in-built DVD player.

Toshiba TDP-T45U Mobile DLP Projector Review

Toshiba advertise their TDP-T45U DLP projector as an all rounder capable of being used for professional presentations or for home entertainment. The TDP-T45U has the primary qualifications for both duties with an XGA (1024×800) resolution, 2500 ANSI lumens of brightness and a good contrast ratio of 2000:1. The DLP (digital light processing) projection engine is a single 0.55″ DMD from Texas Instruments.

For the presenter there is a remote control, RS232C (mini DIN-8 pin) PC socket and a D-sub 15-pin monitor output so the presenter can face the audience while seeing what is on the screen using a monitor. What might be missed by some is a USB port to connect USB drive for loading multimedia files rather than a PC (laptop) which is sizeable something extra to carry. The projectors onboard 1W speaker is probably suitable for sound effects and little else. Toshiba provide a carry bag for the projector.
