Optoma EP7150 Ultra Portable DLP Projector Review

The Optima (Optoma) EP7150 is a “micro” projector intended for the road warrior making business presentations in various locations while traveling. The projector utilizes a DLP projection system based on a single 0.55” DDR DMD from Texas Instruments.

Summarizing and evaluating the features:

  • the Optoma EP7150 weighs in at 2.7lbs (1.2kg) and has a minimal form factor of 8.5” x 2.44” x 6.65” (216 x 62 x 169mm) making it conveniently portable;
  • a high brightness of 2000 lumens means that it can be used in bright ambient light conditions such as meeting rooms with unshaded windows;
  • the projector’s high 2500:1 contrast ratio makes for crisp images;
  • the native XGA (1024×768) resolution is suitable for business presentation purposes mostly consisting of PowerPoint presentations, images and video clips;
  • for the time convenience of a quick setup and shut-down there is an express on/off function;
  • for setup flexibility the Optoma EP7150 has a zoom lens and vertical keystone correction of ± 16° – the projectors compact size and light weight also make for easier setup;
  • the IR remote control comes with laser pointer;
  • there is a USB connection for direct loading of media files;
  • the EP7150 comes with a 2 years limited parts and labour warranty with 90 days on the lamp;
  • the estimated lamp life of 3,000 to 4,000 hours is impressive;
  • included accessories include an AC power cord, VGA to VGA cable, composite video cable, remote control, batteries for the remote, lens cap and a carrying case;
  • the projectors noise levels of 40dB in normal mode and 38dB in economy mode are a detraction and is probably related to the compact form factor. External speakers should be used rather than relying on the 1W onboard unit.
