DisplayPort Video Interface Equipped LCD Monitor – a Samsung World First

Samsung has become the first LCD manufacturer in the world to create an LCD panel with a DisplayPort Video Interface. Samsung have indicated they were prompted to make the move by numerous inquiries from computer integrators. DisplayPort has been sanctioned by the industry body VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) having picked up support from Samsung, Genesis, ATI, Dell, HP, NVIDIA, Philips, Tyco, and Molex. The intention is for DisplayPort to replace DVI and eventually VGA.

The 30 inch LCD panel development is a joint project with Genesis Microchip Inc.
The DisplayPort interface transmits graphics data at a rate of 10.8Gbps enabling 2560×1600 pixels resolution without any color smear. This transfer rate would require at least three DVI. While DiplayPorts transmission range is already wider than that of other interface standards it can be easily expanded.

The attraction of DisplayPort to PC integrators is that the interface technology supports both internal (notebooks) and external (box-to-box) connections between PCs and monitors. It consolidates internal and external display signaling providing easier scalability and extension to accommodate new display features or applications.

Mass production of Samsung’s 30-inch panel is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2008.
