August 27, 2007ProjectionDesign evo2sx+ DLP Portable Business ProjectorThe evo2sx+ is a DLP projector by Norwegian projection specialist ProjectionDesign which has been manufacturing projectors since the 1980’s. The evo2sx+ has an uncommon, higher SXGA+ resolution (1400 x 1050 pixels) compared to the more common XGA (1024 × 768) monitor resolution of business projectors. The SXGA+ resolution has almost double the workspace of regular XGA making it suitable for applications beyond PowerPoint presentations such as displaying CAD/CAM images and detailed graphical designs from video sources including normal monitors right through to graphics workstations.
With a brightness of 2500 ANSI lumens the evo2sx+ will cut through a lot of ambient light to project a bright image. Contrast is also high at 2500:1. The evo2sx+ has a high end specification with a Texas Instruments DLP DarkChip 3 DMD and a Faroudja video processing chip. Other standout features are a zoom lens and lens shift (0 - 100% vertical) for flexible setup and a quiet fan (24 dB(A) approx) for a portable business projector. Conveniently the projector will work with a very wide range of video sources.
ProjectionDesign’s evo2sx+ Texas Instruments DarkChip 3 DMD Microdisplay ChipsetThe ProjectionDesign’s evo2sx+ is based on Texas Instruments DarkChip 3 DLP chip. The chip has millions of tiny mirrors that switch on and off some 15,000 times per second to create the video output required. This sort of speed will deliver sharp pictures for even fast movement video. A feature of the DarkChip 3 DMD is BrilliantColor, Texas Instruments technology for delivering improved brightness and a wider range of colors. Traditionally, most display devices render images using a combination of the three primary colors red, green and blue. The full gamut of colors visible to the human eye cannot be reproduced using this approach, with the color space subset covered not including vivid colors such as yellow and cyan commonly seen in nature. By processing up to six color channels BrilliantColor allows vendors, such as ProjectionDesign, to create multi-primary color systems by adding colors such as yellow, cyan and magenta colors for color rendering. As well as increasing the color space which can be rendered with the added color filters the system also utilizes the light source more efficiently with a 50% increase of 50% brightness. Another benefit of BrilliantColor technology derives from its use of floating point arithmetic for more accurate rendering calculations. According to Texas Instruments, this results in less noise and more accurate colors at the display with over 200 trillion color shades being possible. Faroudja Image ProcessingThe ProjectionDesign evo2sx+ has Faroudja deinterlacing with DCDi (short for Directional Correlational Deinterlacing). Faroudja, a subsidiary of Genesis Microchip Inc., originally developed DCDi technology to eliminate the jaggedness that conventional upconverters introduced to diagonal edges in video. The Faroudja DCDi technology is included in the single chip image processing system provided by Genesis for producing a superior image quality. More detail on Faroudja capabilities can be read in our review of the BenQ W10000 DLP projector which also has a DarkChip3 from Texas Instruments. ProjectionDesign have recently released the M25 1080p, DLP projector. At just 3.7 inches high, 9.2 inches deep and 10.8 inches wide, ProjectionDesign advertise the M25 as the smallest home theatre projector available on the market today. ProjectionDesign’s evo2sx+ is one of those rare projectors with a 3 year standard warranty. The lamp has a fairly standard 90 day or 500 hour (whichever comes first) warranty however, the lamp life is quoted at a reasonably long 3000 hours in economy mode and 2250 hours at full brightness.
