Samsung LN-T3253H, LN-T 2653H, LN-T 2353H and LN-T1953H 720p High Definition LCD TV Review

Samsung’s high definition 720p (1366 x 768 pixels), native resolution 53H series is a very popular entry level choice for LCD HDTV purchasers. Attractive features are the 8000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and smooth action images supplied by a fast 8ms response time. Samsung’s S-PVA (super patterned vertical alignment) display technology provides a very wide 178 degree viewing angle. The CCFL backlight has a wide color gamut for lifelike images and sound quality has not been ignored with the inclusion of SRS TruSurround XT technology for surround sound. The range of picture adjustment options is also impressive.

CCFL Backlight

Samsung’s 53H series LCD TVs give 92% coverage of the NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) color standard delivering more vivid, life like colors compared to LCD TVs with the common 72% coverage. At the moment only LED backlit LCD TVs like the Samsung 87S series can deliver a higher 100%+ coverage.

Audio

SRS Lab’s TruSurround XT technology is included in all Samsung’s 53H series LCD HDTVs. SRS Lab’s technology simulates the surround sound field of a home theatre using only two speakers. Twin channel stereo output can be produced from mono, stereo or multi-channel input signals. TruSurround XT is compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels.

HDMI-CEC

CEC (Consumer Electronics Control or HDMI-CEC) is an optional feature of HDMI v1.3 which Samsung has implemented allowing global control all CEC-enabled peripherals using a single remote. CEC will allow up to ten devices to discover and communicate with one another through HDMI cabled network.

Intended to simplify control of video equipment, individual AV devices can control each other utilizing CEC. As an example, closing the DVD tray could trigger the DVD player to switch the TV on, select the correct video source and select the best video and audio modes for playback.

Manufacturers have used various terminologies to refer to their implementation of CEC including; Theater Sync – Sony, Regza Link – Toshiba, Simplink – LG, EZ-Sync – JVC and Aquos Link – Sharp. All units complying with the CEC standard should work together without any problems.

Picture Adjustments and Other Features

The Samsung 53H series LCD HDTVs offer an excellent range of picture adjustment options including:

  • Five color temperature presets
  • Detailed color temperature controls: gain and offset adjustments for red, green, and blue
  • Energy Saving Control: four steps of saving through dimming the backlight. Manual settings and an Auto mode that adjusts the backlight to the level of ambient lighting
  • Three picture modes: independent for each video source

Other handy features include:

  • V-Chip System: block objectionable content
  • Multi-lingual on-screen displays: English, Spanish and French
  • Variable sleep timer: TV shut down after a set time
  • Auto volume leveler: maintains the same audio volume across channel changes
  • Illuminated remote control keys: volume, channel and device control
  • Game Mode: enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response and enhances the sounds of your games.
  • Sound Leveler: automatically maintains average output loudness.

Connections

The Samsung LNT—53H models have an excellent range of A/V connections available including;

  • 3 HDMI ports
  • 2 Component video inputs
  • 2 S-video inputs (1 side/1 rear)
  • PC input
  • USB 2.0

With the volume of digital images consumers now have a USB port is something all televisions should have for sharing digital images using a range of multimedia storage devices.
