Mitsubishi 73 inch WD-73733 65 inch WD-65733 and 57 inch WD-57733 1080p DLP HDTV Review

The Mitsubishi Diamond 733 series (73 inch WD-73733 65 inch WD-65733 and 57 inch WD-57733 1080p) DLP HDTVs all offer Full HDTV resolution on a large screen. They have some of the latest HDTV features to future proof them such as x.v.Color support, three 3.1 HDMI connections and the ability to control multiple AV devices from one remote with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) being implemented.

Mitsubishi DLP 6-color Light Engine

The 733 series DLP rear projection HDTVs have a single DMD chip and color wheel configuration. The Digital Micro Device (DMD) chips have over 2 million microscopic tilting mirrors on each chip for controlling the light to each of the over 2 million pixels required for 1080p high definition. Drawing on Texas Instruments BrilliantColor technology, Mitsubishi have implemented a color wheel which includes yellow, cyan and magenta as well as the conventional mix of red, green and blue. With the wider color palette to work with, the 733 models are able to produce whiter whites and a wider range of colors for more vibrant and life-like images. Brightness levels are some 50% higher than for traditional three-color projection units.

x.v.Color

With the 733 series models, Mitsubishi have implemented the new xvYCC color standard providing an extended gamut (color space) some 1.8 times as large as the commonplace sRGB color space. Mitsubishi (and Sony) refer to the xvYCC color standard as x.v.Color in their marketing literature. With few x.v.Color supported video sources available at the moment its inclusion can be considered as future proofing.

Deep Color

Deep Color refers higher bit number color in flat panel displays. Extra bit depth reduces the chance of false contouring (looks like tidemarks) which can occur with extended color gamuts such as x.v.Color.

Mitsubishi’s Easy Connect and NetCommand

To simplify set up and operation, Mitsubishi have provided Easy Connect and Net Command. Easy Connect automatically recognizes inputs as they are plugged in and NetCommand allows for simple icon based control of most any brand of TV set top box, AV receiver or other home theater component from a remote.

Video Processing

HDTV picture quality has become progressively more dependent on video processor performance. While high definition displays provide remarkable image detail, they unfortunately also magnify any image defects which may include noise and image artifacts caused by poor video processing. Image defects which may be masked by lower resolution displays become evident on a HDTV. Image noise and artifacts can be introduced through the compression required to pack hundreds of channels within limited transmission bandwidth or during deinterlacing which is required to convert NTSC or PAL interlaced signals to progressive-scan for digital display.

Video processors de-interlace and scale video signals to fit native resolution however, they also have algorithms to improve image quality and remove any noise or artifacts. Video processing technologies built-in to the Mitsubishi Diamond series 733 DLP HDTVs include:

Color 4D Video Noise Reduction is a suite of advanced algorithms filter video noise more efficiently for clean, crisp images.
SharpEdge, an edge-definition signal processing system, enhances horizontal and vertical edges (no jagged edge distortions)
Plush1080 is Mitsubishi’s scaling technology for converting other resolution video sources for display on the 1080p display
Tru1080p Processing maintains 1080p high definition signals throughout processing (no down conversions)
PerfecTint allows one to adjust the tint of six separate colors independently of each other and separately for every input.

Connections

The 734 models all have one front and three rear HDMI 1.3 inputs and two rear component inputs for HD connectivity. There is also a front and two rear component video inputs for easy connection of HD video sources such as a game consoles. A front panel positioned USB input for connecting a USB drive, camera or similar device for viewing images is also provided.

Mitsubishi’s next step up is the 744 1080p DLP HDTV range which has additional contrast and color improvement technologies.
