May 13, 2008ENERGY STAR Energy Efficiency Promotion Program for TelevisionsENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy promoting energy efficiency. There are significant savings to be made as televisions combined with associated consumer electrical products like DVD players and set-top boxes can contribute 10% of a household’s annual electricity bill.. Even when they are off home electronics use power for features like clock displays. It has been calculated that if the average home replaced their common consumer products with ENERGY STAR models it would save over 25 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions (same as taking 3 million cars off the road).
The most recent EPA specification (November 2007) for televisions requires that new models will have to achieve a 30% reduction in energy use to gain an energy star. Energy Star ResourcesEnergy Star Manufacturer List (PDF)
