Optoma HD65 720p HD 1600 lumens DLP Home Theater Projector Review

Optoma’s HD65 720p (1280×720 pixels) is a value for money, high definition, home theatre projector. The projector is based on Texas Instruments DLP 0.65 inch DLP Darkchip2 technology which supports Brilliant Color delivering greater brightness and more lifelike colors. A notable feature is its weight of only 4 lbs (1.8kg) making it a portable unit.

Optoma HD65 DLP Home Theater Projector

The maximum brightness of 1600 ANSI lumens is bright for a home theatre projector which means you shouldn’t have problems running it in economy mode (less bright) to extend the projection bulb life out from 2000 hours to 3000 hours (rated). Contrast is an important factor in achieving good picture quality and Optoma manage to squeeze out a 4000:1 contrast ratio with their AI technology engaged and 3000:1 when it’s not. Optoma’s ImageAI processing technology analyses each scene (frame actually) and adjusts the lamp brightness to achiever better black levels bringing out more detail in darker scenes.

The HD65 has a single DLP chip combined with a 4x, six segment color wheel which is slower than the market average of 5x but balanced by the high number of segments to reduce the likelihood of those susceptible seeing color rainbows.

While the HD65 has horizontal keystone correction, the zoom ratio is only 1.1:1.0 (common to DLP projectors) which means to achieve a particular size projected image there is not of lot of flexibility in the mounting distance from the screen. This may not be a problem when ceiling mounting but, should be considered for other mounting options. It’s worth noting that the HD65 has an excellent multi-function remote control.

The warranty offered on the Optoma HD65 is a base level 1 Year Limited Parts and Labor on the projector and 90 days on lamp.

You will get the best images when the source video matches the native resolution of the projector however, the Optoma HD65 is compatible with a wide range of video source formats;

Computer Compatibility VGA, SVGA, XGA, SXGA+ Resized, VESA, PC and Macintosh Compatible

Video Compatibility NTSC, PAL, SECAM, EDTV (480p), HDTV (576i/p, 720i/p, 1080i/p)

The Optoma has a reasonable range of connection options for a home theatre projector including HDMI, Component, VGA, Composite, S-Video, USB and even a 12v trigger for a motorized screen.
