Optoma EP1691 WXGA Portable Multimedia Data Projector Review

Optoma’s EP1691 business projector features a high brightness of 2500 ANSI lumens, suitable for most business applications, along with a conveniently portable weight of 3.2 lbs (1.45 kg). The EP1691 is based on Texas Instrument’s DLP technology (Single 0.65 inch DDR DMD) and has a WXGA (1280 x 768 pixels) native resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. Apart from matching the resolution of the most modern widescreen laptop displays, WXGA resolution is suited for applications that are very detailed or information intensive. A WXGA resolution allows presenters to display multiple worksheets and spreadsheets on-screen at the same time.

While it has all the attributes of a business projector, the EP1691 can be considered a crossover projector as because of its native WXGA resolution it can display 720p HDTV video without any scaling (scaling causes some picture quality degradation).

While for the best picture you should match the native resolution of the projector to the video source resolution, a wide range of computer and video sources can be scaled by the DDP3020 Imaging ASIC chip.

Computer Compatibility: VGA, SVGA, XGA, WXGA, SXGA+, WXGA+ Resized, VESA, PC and Macintosh Compatible

Video Compatibility: HDTV (1080i/p, 720p, 576i/p, 480i/p); NTSC (M, 3.58/4.43 MHz); PAL (B, D, G, H, I, M, N); SECAM (B, D, G, K, K1, L)

Two factors supporting good picture quality from the EP1691 are;

There is a good range of connection options to connect to wide variety of data/video sources including HDMI, VGA-In, S-Video, Composite Video, USB and Audio-In.

To make setup easier the DDP3020 Imaging ASIC chip provides the EP1691 with keystone correction to square up images between +/- 30 degrees. There is a 1.15 zoom which gives a little more flexibility in the distance from the projector to the screen than other DLP projectors.

For physical security in a business environment the Optoma EP1691 comes with a Kensington Lock Port. Data security is covered by a security password function.

For the convenience of the presenter the well featured IR remote comes with a laser pointer and mouse. The built-in speaker is a fairly standard 1W in expectation that the projector will be hooked into a sound system for all but the smallest audience. With this in mind it should be noted that the sound level from the projector can be up to 37dB in full brightness mode.

In summary, the portability, brightness and crossover WXGA resolution make the EP1691 well worth considering, particularly if you are in the position of being able to use it for both home theatre and business.
