Toshiba’s TDP-SP1U Portable DLP Business Projector Review

Toshiba’s TDP-SP1U DLP business projector is very portable at a light 4.8 lbs but doesn’t miss out on power with an impressive 2,200 ANSI lumens of brightness. This means you can set up in a meeting or conference room with wide open drapes and overhead lighting and still have a sufficiently bright projected image.

The contrast ratio, an essential factor in a good quality image, is excellent at 2000:1 (full on/full off). The TDP-SP1U has a native SVGA (800 x 600 pixels) resolution but, will scale a range of other input resolutions (480p to 1080i and VGA to SVGA). Being a business projector the Toshiba TDP-SP1U has a good compliment of connectivity options including an RS232 port for AV network control system integration. There are composite and S-video ports and a monitor-out for presenters to see on a display what is projected on the screen without turning away from their audience.

The excellent brightness of this projector is due in part to the inclusion of DLP BrilliantColor technology which enables up to a 50 percent increase in brightness. BrilliantColor also improved the vibrancy of color images and gives more “pop” to charts and graphs.

The TDP-SP1U can be front, rear or ceiling mounted although there is not a lot of positioning flexibility with a low zoom ratio of 1.1:1 and limited vertical digital keystone correction for squaring up the projected image. There is an internal speaker of 2W which is suitable for only the smallest of groups. Noise levels are 34 dB (High) and 30 dB (Eco) which are a bit noisier than some other projectors on the market.

Lamp life of the Toshiba TDP-SP1U is fairly good at 3,500 hours in Bright Mode and up to 4,000 hours in Eco Mode. More interesting is the filter free design advantage which keeps damaging dust particles from collecting on imaging elements reducing maintenance and extending the lamp life.

Projector Warranty

The warranty on the lamp is a fairly standard 90 days/500 hours (whichever is first) while that on the projector is 2-Years Parts and Labor.

Included in the Toshiba TDP-SP1U Box

Projector, Power Cord, RGB Cable, CD-ROM, Users Manual, Remote Control with Batteries, and Soft Carrying Bag

Overall the Toshiba TDP-SP1U has an attractive range of features for an equally attractive price for the business professional looking for a portable projector.
