Samsung Series 7 (B750) 1080p LCD HDTV Review

Samsung’s B750 LCD HDTV models (52 inch LN52B750, 46 inch LN46B750 and 40 inch LN40B750) have an impressive range of specification improvements over the previous A750 models. However, like their predecessors they are CCFL-backlit LCD HDTVs not LED edge lit. The B750 models have double the dynamic contrast ratio (150,000:1), double the frame rate (240Hz) and a response time that has been halved (2ms). Together these improvements promise deeper blacks, whiter whites, more details in darker scenes, even further improvements on removing blur from fast on-screen action.

With the 240Hz refresh rate Samsung is actually inserting three (3) interpolated frames between originals compared to one with 120Hz. It’s coming close to eliminating motion blur providing smooth transitions between frames. The processing power to interpolate this many additional frames in 1080p is truly impressive. Advanced users will appreciate the new option to customize Auto Motion Plus by adjusting for judder and motion blur independently.

The new series 7 (B750), and series 6, are once again even more of a home media center incorporating new interactive networking features. All models come with Samsungs Media 2.0 suite which includes; Internet@TV, DLNA connectivity, USB 2.0 Movie Multi-Media Center and a Pre-loaded Content Library (2GB Flash Memory).

The is 2 GB of onboard flash memory available for storage of digital pictures, audio files and videos from devices such as cameras or portable media players. The USB 2.0 Movie: Multi-media Center feature helps you quickly connect to your digital camera, USB drive or MP3 player. The USB 2.0 interface allows you to access videos, playlists and pictures with your remote. Using the network DLNA compatibility one can locate photos, music and videos on networked PCs from your HDTV.

The Internet@TV Content Service provides onscreen access to web-based content from a host of Yahoo! properties (Flickr, News, Weather, and Finance), and well-known names like USA Today and others. The interface is a widgets-based scrollbar across the bottom of the screen for easy browsing. Widgets can be added after purchase and Samsung have a widget development kit available to content providers to expand the content offerings.

The preloaded content library is a multimedia collection including photos, artwork, games, recipes and more.

Samsung have made generous provisions for sound quality starting with 10W of power over twin speakers and an integrated woofer for a low frequency enhanced audio experience. Also included is SRS Lab’s patented SRS TruSurround XT a multi-channel surround sound virtualization technology which produces a surround sound effect using only two speakers. It will handle up to seven (6.1) audio channels.

Moving with the increasing environmental awareness of consumers, Samsung’s Series 7 750 LCD HDTVs feature low power consumption, meeting the more stringent Energy Star v3.0 efficiency guidelines. Samsung have also modified manufacturing processes to avoid the release of Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs). If you feel compelled to avoid the inclusion of mercury you will need to look at the superb new edge lit LED LCD models.
