Samsung Series 6 (B650) LCD HDTV Review

Samsung’s Series 6 (B650) models are an excellent value combination of performance and features. Behind the excellent quality image reproduction of these models is the lofty dynamic contrast ratio (100,000:1), fast frame rate (120Hz) and an excellent response time of (4ms). Combined these features deliver deeper blacks, whiter whites, more detail in dark scenes and reduced blur from fast on-screen action.

Samsung Series 6 (B650) LCD HDTV

Those looking to buy should note that the 55-inch LN55B650, 46 inch LN46B650, 37-inch LN37B650, 32-inch LN32B650 and 40-inch LN40B650 are all 1080p Full HD while the 22-inch LN22B650 and 19-inch LN19B650 are 720p HD. Its also worth pointing out that these models are Samsung’s CCFL-backlit LCD HDTVs not their LED edge lit ones.

With the 120Hz refresh rate the Samsung video processor is actually inserting an extra interpolated frame between originals. The interpolated frames smooth the transitions between frames which are more pronounced the faster an object is moving across the screen such as in sports or games. The smoother transitions reduce motion blur that one might see with early LCD HDTV panels. A very useful feature which will be particularly appreciated by more advanced users is the new option to customize Auto Motion Plus by adjusting for judder and motion blur independently.

New Interactive Networking Features

The Samsung B650 models follow the latest trend of televisions becoming more like a home media center, incorporating new interactive networking features. All models come with Samsungs Media 2.0 suite which includes; Internet@TV, DLNA connectivity, USB 2.0 Movie Multi-Media Center and a Pre-loaded Content Library (2GB Flash Memory).

There is 2 GB of onboard flash memory available for storage of digital pictures, audio files and videos from devices such as cameras or portable media players. The USB 2.0 Movie: Multi-media Center feature helps you quickly connect to your digital camera, USB drive or MP3 player while the USB 2.0 interface allows you to access videos, playlists and pictures with your remote. With the DLNA compatibility it’s easy to locate photos, music and videos on networked PCs from your HDTV.

Samsung’s Internet@TV Content Service provides onscreen access to web-based content from a host of Yahoo! properties (Flickr, News, Weather, and Finance), and well-known names like USA Today and others. The interface is a widgets-based scrollbar across the bottom of the screen for easy browsing. Widgets can be added after purchase. To encourage new content development Samsung have made a widget development kit available for content providers. The preloaded content library is a multimedia collection including photos, artwork, games, recipes and more.

Samsung have not ignored sound quality providing twin 15W speakers and an integrated woofer for a low frequency enhanced audio experience. Also included is SRS Lab’s patented SRS TruSurround XT a multi-channel surround sound virtualization technology which produces a surround sound effect using only two speakers. It will handle up to seven (6.1) audio channels.

You will save power compared to previous LCD HDTV models with the B650 models featuring a 25 percent reduction in energy consumption. A further green credential is Samsung’s avoidance of Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs) release during manufacture. If you would like to purchase a HDTV which doesn’t use mercury you will need to look at the superb new edge lit LED LCD models.
