July 24, 2009Sharp AQUOS LE700 Series LED LCD HDTV ReviewSharp’s LE700 series is its first move into the superior picture quality offered by LED backlit LCD HDTVs as compared to conventional CFL backlit LCD HDTVs. Other headline features are the newly developed deep black level X-Gen Panel, AQUOS Net capability, 120Hz Fine Motion Enhanced technology and leading edge fast pixel response time of 4ms. Sharp are also keen to emphasise the energy efficiency and eco-friendly performance of this new series. The Full HD (1080p) LE700 range includes the 52 inch LC-52LE700UN, 46 inch LC-46LE700UN, 40 inch LC-40LE700UN and 32 inch LC-32LE700UN.
Sharp’s AQUOS LE700 X-Gen PanelAs mentioned, Sharp have endowed the LE700 models with all the advantages of LED backlighting technology which includes delivery of high brightness levels and a stratospheric dynamic contrast ratio of more than 2,000,000:1. As contrast ratio is a prime component of picture quality the flow on benefits are obvious on-screen. The LED backlighting system consists of a full array of LEDs evenly dispersed behind the diffuser giving more uniform and pure colors as well as very even lighting across the entire screen. Deep black levels which were hard to achieve in the early days of LCD technology are delivered by new advanced pixel control which minimizes light leakage. Higher peak brightness is delivered by the X-Gen panel through a wider aperture which allows more light to pass through the panel. The LC-52LE700UN and LC-46LE700UN have a special de-judder feature for smoother reproduction of film content such as slow panning shots. Another smoothing technology for fast on-screen action is the Fine Motion Enhanced technology. The technology inserts extra interpolated frames between the existing ones making the positional jumps between frames smaller and smoother. Sharp specify that the LE700 series has a 176-degree viewing angle however, you should consider this in light of our explanation of what viewing angle means. Eco-Efficient DesignOne of the benefits delivered by LED backlighting is more precise backlighting. Utilizing the finer panel lighting control and the adjustment of lighting levels to suit ambient brightness levels, Sharp have delivered LCD HDTVs which have exceptionally low power requirements. The LE700 models exceed the EPA’s ENERGY STAR criteria by 68 to 52 percent with the smaller screens being the more efficient. ConnectivityAQUOS NetFollowing the trend for new HDTV releases to become more home entertainment center orientated, the LE700 Series includes AQUOS Net (available on 46 and 52 inch models only). AQUOS Net is an Internet delivered service that provides users with access to personalized information. AQUOS Net also improves customer support allowing technicians to connect remotely to a customers TV to assist in adjusting the TV’s settings and optimizing picture quality for the best viewing experience. Other Connection OptionsLE700 models have four HDMI and a built-in ATSC, QAM and NTSC tuner for access to DTV and analog TV channels. I’ve got this TV, and I want everyone to know that they shouldn’t listen to the critics who say that its lack of Localized Dimming technology reduces its contrast capability. It doesn’t. The 2,000,000:1 ratio stated in the specifications is most likely a conservative estimate, as the deep blacks on this unit are nothing short of amazing. My other TV, a 42″ Panasonic plasma, doesn’t even approach the level of richness in deep colors I get from this one. Well worth every penny, and then some.
