Sony’s BRAVIA XBR10 is a Full HD edge-lit LED LCD HDTV. TheLED backlighting delivers some significant improvements over conventional Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) lit LCD notably the XBR10’s 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and the slim profile which Sony has achieved.

As well as a exceptionally high contrast ratio for improved picture quality, the Sony XBR10 has the highest currently available frequency (240Hz) for motion blur reduction. This is a quadrupling the frame rate of conventional LCD TVs involving the interpolation three new frames for smoother motion of objects between successive frames. The Sony XBR10 features Internet connectivity which delivers a variation of Yahoo Widgets designed specifically for televisions. Yahoo Widgets display Internet sourced content in real time. Some common ones cover News, Weather and finance Finance, and Flickr and many more are becoming available over time. Internet connectivity is an attribute worth considering in buying a HDTV as it provides a big expansion in content availability and flexibility. Faster broadband speeds will improve the variety of content available over time.

Potential purchasers should note that the XBR10 has a comparatively high power draw compared to other LED LCD HDTVs available. Also high is the asking price compared to other available LED LCD HDTVs. A notable exception from the Sony XBR10’s list of features is local dimming which is available with full array LED backlighting. Local dimming is a feature worth having as it further improvement to contrast ratios, black levels and picture quality through the ability to control backlighting in segments and match backlighting across the display to that required by the image being displayed.
