Optoma Home Theatre Projector Range Overview and Comparisons

Optoma’s home theatre projector range includes the HD8200, HD200X, HD20 (1080p) HD65 and HD71 (720p). If you’re unsure which resolution would best suit your needs read our 720p vs 1080p technology guide. All Optoma’s home theatre projectors are DLP technology based on a single Texas Instruments Darkchip3. Contrast ratios across the range are excellent delivering solid picture quality. The HD8200 is the standout with a 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

Brightness levels are excellent for home cinema applications with the exception being the HD65 which can pump out 2,400 ANSI lumens and tolerate a much higher ambient light environment. The color gamut available from the HD71 and HD65 is notably less than the other models due to a different version of the Darkchip3 being used.

All models have vertical keystone correction for easy setup with the HD65 having the most flexibility at +/- 40 degrees. Only the HD8200 and HD71 have horizontal keystone correction for the flexibility of mounting the projector off the centre line of the projection screen. Zoom adjustment is minimal except for the HD8200 with 1.5x adjustment. None of the projectors have a short throw for cramped spaces. The HD8200 is notably quieter than the other models in Optoma’s home theatre range.

Connectivity options are good across the range with all having at least one HDMI port. All projectors provide good computer resolution and video signal format compatibility. Each comes with a full featured, backlit, IR remote control.

The Optoma HD8200 has excellent projector and bulb warranties of three years and one year respectively compared to the standard one year and ninety days. All projectors are of a portable weight except for the hefty HD8200 which comes in at 18.5 lb (8.4 kg).
