November 27, 2009Optoma HD20 and HD200X 1080p DLP Home Theater Projectors ReviewThe Optoma HD20 and HD200X projectors have native Full HD (1080p) resolution for the most lifelike detail currently available. Both projectors are based on the long established DLP technology by Texas Instruments (single Darkchip3 microdisplay panel). The maximum brightness varies between the two models with 1500 and 1700 ANSI lumens for the HD200X and HD20 respectively. Both are high brightnesses for a home theater projector and so both will handle more light than is typical for a home theater environment. It also means that running at the lower brightness/power eco setting is more practical and improves the chance of getting somewhere near the maximium 4,000 hour rated life for the projection bulb at this setting.
The Optoma HD20 wins the prize for the highest dynamic contrast ratio with a ratio of 4,000:1 ahead of 3,500:1 for the HD200X. The higher dynamic contrast ratios are achieved through Optoma’s Image AI which improves the contrast of the picture by optimizing the brightness of the lamp according to the picture content. Projector SetupSome flexibility with the projector height is provided by digital vertical keystone correction of +/- 5 % (% is of image height). As is typical of DLP projectors, the digital zoom is low at 1.2x providing little flexibility with the distance of the projector from the screen for a particular size projected image. None of the Optoma home theatre projectors have a short throw ratio for cramped situations. Both projectors are reasonably quiet with noise levels of 22dB/26dB for the eco/bright settings respectively. The Optoma HD8200 is quietest model in Optoma’s home theatre range. At 6.4 lb (2.9 kg), both projectors are reasonably portable. The Optoma HD200X and HD20 will re-size a wide range of computer resolutions and video input formats as detailed below. S-Video and RS232 are missing from the connectivity options. Computer Compatibility: HD, UXGA, SXGA+, WXGA, SXGA, XGA, SVGA, VGA, VESA, PC and Mac Video Compatibility: Full NTSC, PAL, SECAM, True HDTV (720p, 1080i/p), 480i/p, 576i/p Connectivity: 2x HDMI, DVI,, Composite Video, Component Video Both projectors come with what are industry common warranties of one year for the projector and ninety days for the projection bulb.
