LH40 Full HD 1080p LCD HDTV Review

LG’s LH40 Full HD 1080p LCD HDTV series offers three primary additional features over its recently reviewed, lesser featured LH30 sibling; TruMotion 120Hz for motion blur reduction, USB 2.0 for access to digital music and photos (MP3, JPEG) as well as Intelligent Sensor for energy saving through backlight control. Improved performance includes a very fast 2.7 ms response time (vs 5ms for LG entry models LH30 and LH20) for sharper on screen motion. Contrast ratio is one of the underlying foundations for picture quality and the LG LH40 has an excellent dynamic contrast ratio of 70,000:1.

LG LH40 LCD 1080P HDTV

The LG LH40 series covers a fair range of display sizes including the 55 inch 55LH40, 47 inch 47LH40, 42 inch 42LH40, 37 inch 37LH40 and the 32 inch 32LH40.

Other key features of the LG LH40 LCD HDTV include:

  • Full HD 1080p
  • Three (3) HDMI
  • 24p Real Cinema
  • ISFccc Ready
  • LG SimpLink
  • Smart Energy Saving Plus
  • LG Core Technologies (Picture Wizard, Invisible Speaker System, Clear Voice II and AV Mode II)

TruMotion Drive (120Hz)

Motion blur is an inherent weakness of LCD displays (in comparison to plasma HDTV). With the LH40 series LG introduces 120Hz capability which both smooths out fast moving on-screen motion and combats any smearing or blurring of fast moving on-screen action elements such as is common to sports broadcasts and video games. TruMotion processing also smooths judder which is most noticeable in slow moving camera pans.

Intelligent Sensor

Picture quality, especially contrast and black levels, are affected by ambient light and reflections in the viewing environment. The included intelligent light sensor automatically optimizes the picture through both backlight control and video processing of picture quality elements such as brightness, contrast, color, sharpness and white balance. LG promote the the Intelligent Sensor’s operation as significantly reducing power usage.

Differences Between LH40 and LH20 LCD HDTV

Differences between the LH40 and the recently reviewed entry level LH40 can be summarized as:

  • Full HD 1080p vs 720p
  • Higher dynamic contrast ratio of 70,000:1 vs 30,000:1
  • Brighter display – 500 cd/m2 vs 450 cd/m2
  • Trumotion 120 Hz
  • Intelligent sensor
  • USB 2.0 (JPEG, MP3)
  • 2.7ms response time (vs 5ms)
  • Extra connectivity with 4 HDMI vs 2 HDMI (3 rear/1 side)
