LG INFINIA LE7500 Series 1080p LED LCD HDTV Review | 55LE7500 47LE7500 and 42LE7500

LG’s NFINIA LE7500 Series 1080p LED LCD HDTV includes the 55 inch 55LE7500, 47 inch 47LE7500 and 42 inch 42LE7500. The most notable features of this series are; Edge-lit LED backlighting (with what LG refer to as “basic” local dimming), 120Hz refresh rate for blur reduction, Broadband sourced entertainment options (Netcast Interactive feature suite with Netflix, Vudu, Skype, Napster, YouTube, DivX, AccuWeather, and Yahoo Widgets), DLNA compatibility for network access to music, photos, and video. With optional extras you can take advantage of wireless HD streaming (Wireless Media Hub) and Wi-Fi connectivity (Wi-Fi adapter).

Unlike its more expensive LX9500 and LE8500 siblings, the LE7500 display is edge lit with backlighting LED lamps mounted around the edge of the LCD display. A diffuser panel guides the light and diffuses it as evenly as possible over the back of the LCD panel of the display. Edge mounting usually delivers a thinner display depth at the cost of lighting uniformity (particularly with larger display sizes). However, in the case of LG the full array LED backlighting of the LX9500 and LE8500 models has been achieved with a comparatively thin display.

Samsung were the first to achieve local dimming with edge lighting and LG has followed suit however, the local dimming is fairly coarse or “basic” with only 16 separately dimmable segments independent of display size. Having only 16 dimmable areas (or segments) be aware to look for possible “blooming” which is covered in our technical guide on local dimming. Light blooming occurs typically with bright objects set against a dark background and is the result of an imperfect match of the brighter backlit area to the displayed bright object area. As one can easily imagine, the possibility of blooming becomes higher the smaller the number of dimmable segments and the larger the display size.
