Samsung D8000 2011 Series LED LCD 3D 1080P Full HD Smart TV – UN55D8000 and UN46D8000 Review

Samsung’s D8000 series is the flagship of the 2011 range of LED LCD 3D 1080p HDTVs. The size range is fairly large from 46 inches for the 46 inch UN46D8000 though to 65 inches for the UN65D8000 with the 55 inch UN55D8000 and 60 inch UN60D8000 in between. As one would expect this series is one of Samsung’s SmartTVs which can function as an entertainment hub using the appropriately named Smart Hub user interface. Thanks to extensive connectivity options headed by WiFi Internet access this HDTV can also act as a communications hub featuring video phone calls via Skype and text messaging via Web browser access to email and social media sites such as Facebook.

Samsung 2011 Series D8000 LED LCD 3D 1080P HDTV

The D8000 LED LCD series shares virtually all features with the next notch down series the D7000. It does however have a higher contrast ratio of 25M:1 vs 15M:1 resulting in more detail being apparent particularly in darker scenes. The D8000 is distinguished from the D7000 by a Brushed Titanium Cabinet color vs gray for the D7000.

The clarity of fast motion is also improved with the video processor interpolating three extra frames between the original 60 frames per second (fps) to deliver 240 fps. If you are wondering how much difference this might make in comparison to the 120Hz of the D6500 series read our analysis in our 120Hz vs 240Hz article.

Samsung have added some confusion to the field of LCD motion smoothing by referring to it with a new terminology Clear Motion Rate (CMR) itakes into account all three contributing factors to motion clarity being: display refresh rate, image processor speed and backlight technology. While it’s a very valid concept, it requires all manufacturers to publish such analysis to be of use to consumers. In terms of the D8000 series, the CMR is 960 compared to the 720 of the D7000 LED LCD series.
