June 13, 2011LG INFINIA LW6500 Series 1080p 3D LED Smart HDTV Review – 47LW5600 55LW5600 65LW5600The LG INFINIA LW6500 series LED backlit, 3D enabled, LCD, 1080p SmartTV has TruMotion 240Hz, local dimming, DLNA and WiFi connectivity (adaptor included) along with energy savings features. The series covers the mid range sizes and includes three models; the 47 inch 47LW6500, 55 inch 55LW6500 and 65 inch 65LW6500. The LW6500 models deliver an excellent dynamic contrast ratio of 9 million:1 (thanks to local dimming). The feature most shoppers will be looking for is described by LG as SmartTV. Using a simple interface with a wand style remote (similar to the Wii remote) users can access near limitless content including movies, customizable apps, videos and the Web.
The LW6500 comes with LG Electronics Cinema 3D – its recently released 3D technology. Unlike some other manufacturers 3D offerings LG’s technology uses polarized light and does not require synchronization between the HDTV and LCD shutter glasses. LG’s Cinema 3D technology is in fact similar to that used in cinemas. A Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) optimizes the separation of images for the left and right eye, which are then filtered by the viewers polarized glasses to give the 3D effect with minimal cross-talk. LG has addressed the dimming effect of a passive (polarized light) 3D system by placing a thin film over the screen to improve brightness. It has also overcome the color shift inherent in this 3D system. LG has a 2D to 3D conversion feature however, like all such software the end result is not the same quality as native 3D content (shot in 3D). While arguments may be raging about the superiority of LG’s passive (polarized light) vs others (Samsungs) active 3D technology when viewed side-by-side there doesn’t seem to be a significant enough quality difference to definitively drive consumers in one direction or the other. Three advantages of the LG 3D glasses is that they are; lighter, don’t require batteries/charging and are cheap in comparison to LCD shutter glasses. Using polarization means viewers have a wider viewing angle, are not distance limited by the synchronization signal and can even view 3D laying down. LG provides four pairs of glasses with each 3D HDTV and buying extra pairs for other family and guests is not an expensive exercise as with LCD shutter 3D glasses. The LW6500 series has the same base specification as the recently reviewed LV5500 apart from the addition of 3D capability and 240Hz TruMotion which creates extra frames and reduces the chances of motion blur in fast moving on-screen action.
