BenQ MP771 DLP Short Throw Projector Review

The short throw capability of BenQ’s newly launched MP771 DLP projector is being emphasized in BenQ’s marketing. The MP771 is actually the first of a series of new projectors which will share the short throw feature. Having a short throw distance makes the MP771 suitable for use in cramped spaces which would have projectors with a longer throw producing an unacceptably small image. As an example of its capability, it is able to project a 74-inch image from only one meter.

BenQ MP771 Projector

Other features providing the MP771 with flexibility of use are the high 3000 ANSI lumens brightness and Wall Color Correction Technology allowing it to project acceptably bright and clear images in bright ambient lighting and against colored walls respectively. A high 2000:1 contrast ratio boosted by the Unishape Lamp Lighting technology will provide images with sharper detail.

BenQ SP830 and SP831 HD Projectors with Twin Screen Capability Announced

The unique feature BenQ emphasize heavily with their SP830 and SP831 DLP projectors is the ability to project video side-by-side on the screen. This could be used to perhaps show a PowerPoint slide on one side and a demonstration video on the other or display two different PC applications at the same time. Users can connect dual video sources at the same time for example, two PCs or a PC and a DVD player.

BenQ SP830 Projector

The twin differences between the SP830 and SP831 are the resolution and brightness. The SP830 has a WXGA (1280X768) resolution and maximum brightness of 3500 ANSI lumens compared to XGA and 4000 ANSI lumens for the SP831. BenQ advertise the projectors as personal/business projectors. Both the SP830 and SP831 have the lumens for large rooms with plenty of ambient light as may be encountered in business and even education. A maximum quoted image size of 300” is getting very large. For a personal projector, the lumen levels are way ahead of market competitors. The weight at 7.9lbs (3.58kg) does not put the projectors in the portable category. The contrast ratio for both of 2000:1 is adequate for the intended duty.

BenQ W100 WVGA DLP Home Cinema Projector Review

The BenQ W100 is a WVGA (480p – 854×480) resolution, entry level, DLP based, home cinema projector. It has a reasonably bright 1300 ANSI lumens lens for a home theater projector and a suitably high contrast ratio of 2500:1.

BenQ W100 Projector

Features which stand out with the BenQ W100 projector are:

  • the fast (4 speed), 7 segment color wheel which makes it far less susceptible to any rainbow effects. This is particularly advantageous if the projector is to be used for any gaming duties.
  • the low <29dB sound level (25dB under eco mode) compared to similar duty projectors on the market.
  • a lamp life of 4000 hours in eco mode and 3000 at full brightness. With the high cost of replacement bulbs this is something for the home theater purchaser to consider seriously

BenQ W500 3LCD 720p Home Cinema Projector Review

The BenQ W500 is a 720p resolution projector. Its brightness of 1100 ANSI lumens makes it a projector which needs the low ambient lighting of a home cinema to look good. The unit has an excellent contrast ratio of 5000:1 although as discussed in an earlier article, contrast ratio should not be a deciding factor in selecting between projectors. The BenQ W500 is the only one of the three BenQ Home Cinema Projectors which incorporates 3LCD technology. The PE7700 and W100 are both DLP projectors.

BenQ W500 Projector

BenQ have made the W500 simple to set up with horizontal and vertical lens shift and horizontal and vertical keystone correction. Lens shift would be the alignment method of choice as it does not tend to introduce video artifacts. The W500 is reasonably quiet with a noise level of 28dB in economic mode. It has a good range of connectors including HDMI.

Flexible Color E-Paper - A4 Size - Developed by LG.Philips LCD.

Its something many e-paper developers have been striving for – color e-paper. LG. Philips LCD have announced today, May 13 2007, that they have developed an A4 size (14.1 inch) flexible color E-paper display. The A4 display uses electronic ink technology from E-Ink Cxorp.

LG Philips Color A4 e-paper

A gamut of 4,096 colors can be reproduced and the display can be viewed from a full 180 degrees. LG.Philips LCD use a metal foil on a plastic substrate to produce a flexible display. According to LG. Philips LCD, the displays are extremely energy efficient and extremely thin (300 micrometers) with a display quality that rivals a printed page.

BenQ MP720p Multimedia DLP Projector Review

The BenQ MP720p projector is well priced projector delivering 2500 ANSI lumens of brightness making it suitable for business use where there considerable ambient light, even overhead lighting. BenQ have also added other features which enhance the projectors business usefulness.

BenQ MP720p home and business projector

The MP720p utilizes Texas Instruments’ DLP (Digital Light Processing) microdisplay technology. Native resolution is XGA (1024 x 768) although the unit has resolutions from VGA (640 x 350) to SXGA (1280 x 1024). The projector has a single DLP microdisplay chip and therefore has a color wheel. In this case BenQ have employed their “golden ratio” color wheel which has 5 segments to balance color saturation and maximize color accuracy with the original input signal.

A color wheel adds to projector noise but, BenQ has done a good job with their baffled cooling system and in this case delivers a 28dB sound level in economic mode and 31dB otherwise.

With this unit one can project an image from 31 to 300 inches in size. Of course image brightness on the screen depends on the ambient light levels and the projector positioning.

BenQ MP611c Home and Business DLP Projector Review

The BenQ MP611c projector is well priced projector delivering 2100 ANSI lumens of brightness making it suitable for business use where there is more ambient light than the typical home projection situation. BenQ have also added other features which enhance the projectors business usefulness.

The MP611c utilizes Texas Instruments’ DLP (Digital Light Processing) microdisplay technology. Native resolution is SVGA (800 x 600) although the unit has resolution support up to 1080i. The projector has a single DLP microdisplay chip and therefore has a color wheel. In this case BenQ have employed their “golden ratio” color wheel which has 5 segments to balance color saturation and maximize color accuracy with the original input signal.

A color wheel adds to projector noise but, BenQ has done a good job with their baffled cooling system and in this case delivers a 24dB sound level which is whisper quiet.

BenQ W9000 Personal / Home Cinema Projector

BenQ recently announced the introduction of their BenQ W9000 HD (1920 x 1080 resolution) home theater DLP projector. The BenQ W9000 features BenQ’s proprietary Senseye technology and Advanced Continuous Electronic IRIS. All important to home theater satisfaction, projector noise is not something to worry about in ths case as BenQ have produced a whisper quiet design that reduces the fan noise to 23dB.

Texas Instruments DLP DarkChip3

According to its specification the BenQ W9000 digital projector is based on microdisplay technology with a single Texas Instruments DarkChip 3 DLP chip. The chip has millions of tiny mirrors that switch on and off some 15,000 times per second to create the video output required. This sort of speed is required for delivering sharp pictures for sport and other fast movement video.

The W9000 is advertised as having a 0.8” 1080p DMD Chip from Texas Instruments with a native 1080p resolution which means it has a micromirror on the DMD chip for each pixel of the 1920 x 1080 pixel display. Texas Instruments have a technology they call SmoothPicture (sometimes referred to as wobulation) which is used to double the horozontal image resolution from any video source. Each frame is actually produced by the projection of two subframes slightly offset (by the wobbling back and forth of the DLP chip micromirrors) in extremely rapid succession. The human eye interprets the result as a single seamless image of higher definition. SmoothPicture is a technology for manufacturers to reduce the cost of high resolution displays. (read more..)
