Projection

The Infocus IN1 projection engine is based on DLP technology from Texas instruments. The IN1 has a VGA (640 x 480 pixels) native resolution. The contrast ratio is a respectable 1500:1 – especially as it is for Full On/Full Off testing which delivers lower contrast ratio figures. With a brightness of 500 ANSI lumens (max), a low ambient light environment is required for a bright on-screen projected image.

InFocus IN12 Projector - Ultra Portable for Business - Review

The InFocus Work Big IN12 at 3.9 lbs (1.77 kg) light with notebook style slimness of 1.7 in (4.32 cm) can be considered an ultra portable projector. InFocus IN12 projector

An impressive form factor and weight have not eaten into the performance of the InFocus IN12. With a brightness of 2,000 ANSI lumens and a 1800:1 contrast ratio the projector will comfortably produce an acceptably bright image in even high ambient light conditions. The XGA resolution matches what the market expect for resolution for a business application projector.

Infocus LP70+ Mobile Business Projector Review

The Infocus LP70+ is a very light 2.4lb (1.1kg) mobile business projector with an XGA (1024 x 768) resolution. It has a an excellent brightness for its “mobile” class of 1500 ANSI lumens making it suitable for operation in rooms with a fair amount of ambient light - although you wouldn’t want the image size to be too large. Contrast ratio at 1100:1 is suitable for the application. The Infocus LP70+ is a DLP projector having a Texas Instruments 0.7″ XGA DMD DDR.

There is some flexibility available for setting up the LP70+ with a 1.25:1 manual zoom and

Infocus IN24+ IN26+ DLP Business Projectors Review

The IN24+ and IN26+ come from Infocus’s range of business projectors. The projectors are based on Texas Instrument’s DLP technology. Resolution is the only difference between the two models with the IN24+ having an SVGA (800 x 600 pixels) native resolution and the IN26+ XGA (1024 x 768 pixels). They are best suited to business presentations with the display of PC applications such as PowerPoint. The projectors are compatible with 640 x 480, 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 resolution sources. With a brightness of 2,200 ANSI lumens it has the brightness to project a large clear image in meeting rooms even when overhead lights are on.

Contrast Ratio

The IN24+ and IN26+ have a 2000:1 contrast ratio determined by the less conservative full On/ full Off test which delivers higher test results than the standard ANSI test. However, the figure is high enough to expect the projectors could be used in well illuminated environments. (read more..)

InFocus IN72 Home Entertainment DLP Projector Review

InFocus’s Play Big IN72 has the same eye catching, futuristic, black and silver, highly curved body as it’s higher specification family member the IN76 which won the European Projector of the Year 2006-2007 awarded by the European Imaging & Sound Association (EISA). It only “under the hood” that the differences become obvious.

InFocus Play Big IN72 DLP Projector Review

The IN72 has a native 480p (854×480) high definition output with other formats being scaled to fit the native resolution. In comparison, two other projectors in the Play Big range the IN74EX and the IN76 have resolutions of (1024×576) and the IN76 (1280×720) respectively.

An interesting feature of the IN72 is the swivel and tilt pedestal. Functionally the base is far easier to use for setup than multiple extendible support legs. The pedestal can be removed if the unit is to be ceiling mounted. Lens shift is not included so digital keystone correction needs to be used to correct any projected image distortion. (read more..)

Infocus Releases Play Big IN78EX DLP Digital Projector - Review

Infocus’s success in winning the European Imaging & Sound Association’s European Projector of the Year 2006-2007 was reported in our article European Projector of the Year Infocus Play Big IN76 Review.

Now Infocus have added the Play Big IN78EX home theatre projector to the Play Big family, which also includes the IN72 and IN74EX.

This projector has the very latest high definition Texas Instruments Digital Light Processing (DLP) DarkChip3. The chip supports Texas Instruments Brilliant Color technology.

The Infocus IN78EX includes a Pixelworks DNX (Digital Natural Expression) chip. Pixelworks is a semiconductor company that designs, develops and markets system-on-chip semiconductors and software for the advanced display industry. The DNX video-processing chip improves the quality of the source video through specialized enhancement techniques. The chip’s integrated HDMI receiver included allows an ImageProcessor to directly receive the digital HDMI signals. The DNX technology uses the following enhancement techniques:

  • DNX Motion-Adaptive De-Interlacing
  • DNX PixelBoost
  • DNX Rich Color Processing
  • DNX Video Enhancement Processing
  • DNX Noise Reduction
  • Digital Deflection Control

The DNX chip also provides digital keystone correction.

At 1000 ANSI lumens the units brightness is suitable for the minimal ambient light situations associated with home theater. The IN78EX has a native resolution of 780p (1,280 x 720).

Also noteworthy is Infocus’s commitment to cinema quality color with the unit being calibrated to D65 color mastering standards.

European Projector of the Year - InFocus Play Big IN76 Review

InFocus’s Play Big IN76 has won the European Projector of the Year 2006-2007 awarded by the European Imaging & Sound Association (EISA). It is in fact, the third year in a row InFocus has won the award. The award was given for both technology and design by a panel of some 50 judges from European multimedia and AV publications covering more than 19 countries.

InFocus Play Big IN76 DLP Projector Review

The IN76 has a native 720p (1280 x 720) high definition output with other formats being scaled to fit the native resolution.. There are two other lower specification projectors in the Play Big range - the IN74EX (native 1024×576) and the IN72 (native 854×480).

The IN76 looks like a performance machine with an eye catching black and silver stylishly curved molded body. An interesting feature of the IN76 is its swivel and tilt pedestal. Users should find the pedestal far easier to use for setup than multiple extendible support legs. Keystone correction would need to be used to correct any image skewing as lens shift is not included. The pedestal can be removed if the unit is to be ceiling mounted.

Two technological highlights of the IN76 are;

  • the Texas Instrument’s high definition DarkChip 2 DMD chip,
  • a Pixelworks DNX video processing/enhancing chip.

The Texas Instruments high definition (720p) .65 WXGA DLP (Digital Light Processing) DarkChip 2 DMD chip is an excellent microdisplay chip but does have a higher specification sibling, the DarkChip3. The DarkChip3 has flatter mirrors with superior reflective properties and reduced inter-pixel spacings (better “fill factor”). Although the DarkChip 2 is a “budget” projector choice it does support Texas Instruments Brilliant Color technology. Brilliant Color was designed to compensate for loss of color saturation when a white segment is added to the color wheel which in not the situation with the IN76. InFocus is targeting the home theatre market where deeper blacks are more important than extra brightness is in the business world.

The Pixelworks DNX video-processing included by InFocus improves the quality of video. The DNX technology uses the following enhancement techniques to deliver a clearer, more natural-looking standard and high-definition video images:
