Pioneer KURO - 50 inch PDP-5080HD, Elite PRO-1150HD and 42 inch KURO PDP-4280HD, Elite KURO PRO-950HD WXGA Resolution Plasma HDTV Review

Popular Science’s Best of What’s New 07 feature review of the Pioneer Kuro does not hold back praise. Popular Science named the Pioneer KURO the Home Entertainment Category Grand Award Winner stating “The company completely redesigned its plasma technology to produce the sharpest, most vivid picture you’ll find on any TV.” Perhaps it is Pioneers success with rejuvenating plasma technology that is behind Matsushita’s (Panasonic) plans to expand and strengthen its plasma display panel products.

Pioneer KURO

The Pioneer KURO PDP-4280HD, PDP-5080HD, Elite PRO-1150HD and Elite PRO-950HD plasma HDTVs are all WXGA (1365 x 768) resolution with a 16:9 Wide-Screen Aspect Ratio. If in doubt about choosing between the WXGA or 1080p resolution models it might help to consider that the human eye has a hard time distinguishing between XGA and 1080p at around three meters from the screen. Also, at the moment the sources for 1080p video are limited including the Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats.

Pioneer KURO PDP-5010FD 50 inch and KURO PDP-6010FD 60 inch 1080p Plasma Displays

The Pioneer KURO PDP-5010FD and PDP-6010FD are both full 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080) having a 16:9 Wide-Screen Aspect Ratio. The only difference in specification between the PDP-5010FD and PDP-6010FD plasmas is the difference in screen sizes.

Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-110FD

Pioneer have placed emphasis on black through all their marketing literature for their KURO plasma full definition TVs. KURO means black in Japanese,. Pioneers’ contention is that black gives each color greater definition, additional shades, more depth and the sharpest details.

Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-110FD 50 inch and KURO Elite PRO-150FD 60 inch 1080p Plasma Displays

Pioneer has come a long way since its 1938 start as a radio and speaker repair shop in Tokyo. The Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-110FD Plasma television was recently judged a 2008 International CES Best of Innovations Design and Engineering Award honoree in the Video Displays category. Competing consumer electronics products are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, independent engineers and members of the trade press. The most impressive products in each category are selected as honorees. The only difference in specification between the 110FD and the 1150FD plasmas is the larger 60 inch screen size.

Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-110FD

The Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-110FD and 1150FD are both full 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080) having a 16:9 Wide-Screen Aspect Ratio. Improvements Pioneer have made from previous models include HDMI 1.3 with implementation of the Deep Color and CEC control support that this version provides. There have been further efforts put into reducing the possibility of burn-in effects. Not only does the KURO come with a built-in digital tuner, it also has a second to enable users to record a digital broadcast on a DVD recorder while viewing another digital broadcast. Important for low ambient light theaters, Pioneer’s remote control has an illuminated keypad.

Pioneer Launches Eight New Flat Panel Plasma Televisions

Pioneer have announced a new range of eight flat panel plasma televisions from 42 to 60 inches which have evolved from their Project Kuro. With the launch of these eighth generation plasma TV models, Pioneer is seeking to position itself as a manufacturer of the highest quality products in audio and video.

Pioneer Plasma High Definition Television

Pioneer’s press releases have emphasized their achievements with:

  • Reproduction of deep blacks and rich three-dimensional colors resulting from newly developed cell structure, crystal emissive layer and newly designed filter. Blacks are said to be 80% darker than the previous generation plasmas.
  • Performance of the new video processor and “Optimum” mode that automatically processes images based on the signal and room conditions. Room lighting conditions are detected and fed back into the video processing loop. Different video content (eg. News, cartoons or sport) is also detected and processed in an optimum manner.
  • speaker technology for enhancing the high definition sound experience. (read more..)

Pioneer PDP-4270HD, PDP-5070HD, PDP-6070HD Plasma Television Series Review

Pioneer recently announced the addition of the PDP-5070HD plasma television to their PDP series which also includes the PDP-4270HD and PDP-6070HD.

Pioneer PDP-5070HD

Pioneer must being doing something right with their plasma designs with its Pioneer Elite PureVision 60 inch PRO-1540HD plasma television receiving a Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award on October 5. The award is made to manufacturers recognized for a groundbreaking product that “represents milestones in design and engineering.”

Plasma Panel Technology

Pioneer have made some improvements to their plasma technology and some the highlights are reviewed below.

Redesigned Deep Encased Cell Structure

To isolate each pixel and prevent light leakage, Pioneer have increased pixel cell depth. The modification was made to produce brighter, sharper images.

New First-Surface Pure Color Filter

Mindful that reflected light reduces viewing clarity and sharpness, Pioneer’s First Surface Pure Color Filter was developed to reduce ambient light reflections. The optical-grade filter is bonded directly to the front of the plasma glass. A second glass layer has been dispensed with generating a weight saving. Pioneer rate the filter as improving contrast by 10% over previous generations.

Higher Color Reproduction than the NTSC Color Standard

The First-Surface Pure Color Filter also improves color reproduction and combined with Pioneers improved red and blue phosphors increases the plasmas color gamut for more life-like colors. Pioneer advertise that the plasmas color space has exceeded NTSC color standards.

Pioneer Elite PureVision PRO-FHD1 Plasma Review

Pioneer Electronics (USA) announced on July 12 that it would begin shipping the world’s first 50 inch 1080p, high definition plasma display – the Pioneer Elite PureVision PRO-FHD1.

Shoppers considering the $10,000 suggested retail price should factor in that the PRO-FHD1 is a display only . Unlike previous models, such as the Pioneer’s Elite PR0-1130HD which has an external media monitor, the Pro-FHD1 is not be equipped with any television tuning capability.

Pioneer Elite PureVision PRO-FHD1 Plasma Display

To achieve the some two million pixels required for the displays native 1920 X 1080 native resolution Pioneer have produced the “world’s smallest pixels measuring .576 millimeters” A video scaler up-converts 480i, 720p, 720i and 1080i signals to 1080p, increasing the resolution.

Pioneer have introduced a new T-shaped electrode to prevent individual cells misfiring despite being half the size as previous generations. Pioneer market this as allowing them to maintain its sharp, bright accurate images when reproducing at a native 1080p resolution.

The display had carried over Pioneer proprietary technologies from previous models.

Deep Encased Cell Structure is an increased pixel cell depth with a corresponding increase in overall phosphor area for a brighter image. Pioneer case each cell with horizontal ribs to minimize light leakage from neighboring cells for sharper, more accurate images.

A Pure Crystal Emissive Layer has been included by Pioneer to improve both contrast and brightness while reducing power consumption. The layer is sandwiched between the plasma glass and the individual light cells to conduct energy more efficiently so that each cell is charged and discharged three times faster. The swift charge and discharge of individual pixels results in designed to give a smooth transition from color to black resulting in blacker blacks and more visible detail in darker scenes.

Advanced PureCinema is advertised by Pioneer as restoring films “unique, natural imagery which is lost in the transfer from film to DVD”.

Pioneers First Surface Pure Color Filter was developed to reduce the effects of reflected light on accurate color display. The optical-grade filter is bonded directly to the plasma glass front to eliminate refracted light.

The Elite’s ISF C3 capability allows for the optimization of the display for a particular viewing environment. Color calibration can be achieved using a detailed gamma selection with eight steps.Pioneer offer the optional service of a professional calibrator to adjust your plasma display using the ISF facility.

The Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1 comes with two 14 Watt speakers with WOW patented sound technology by SRS Labs. WOW improves the dynamic audio performance of twin speakers by expanding the size of the audio image and improving the perception of low frequency sound (more deep rumbles for action flicks). To quote SRS Labs, “WOW accomplishes this by providing a panoramic three-dimensional audio image that extends the sound field in both the horizontal and vertical planes, and lowers the perceived bass response well beyond the low frequency limitations of the drivers.”

Another audio technology by SRS Labs included by Pioneer is TruBass - a signal processing technology for bass enhancement. To quote SRS Labs, “It uses psychoacoustics and speaker driver physics to increase the perception of bass while decreasing demands on the driver.”

When purchased from an authorized dealer, consumers receive a limited warranty for two years with Pioneer Elite products.
