Samsung’s Series 4, 720p High Definition A450 model LCD HDTVs share the same specification as Samsung’s recently reviewed Series 5, A550 models with the following differences;

• Lower 720p 1366 (H) x 768 (V) pixels resolution vs 1080p
• Lower 5,000:1 contrast ratio vs 15,000:1
• Slower 8ms response time vs 5ms
• Narrower 160 x 150 (H/V) degree viewing angle compared to 179 degrees
• No USB2.0 (Wiselink) port

The Samsung A450 models have gained “best seller” status for LCD HDTV’s with Amazon where numerous user reviews are available.

Samsungs LCD HDTV Series 5 has four 550 models, the 37 inch LN37A550, 40 inch LN40A550, 46 inch LN46A550 and 52 inch LN52A550. All are full high definition, 1080p (1920(H) x 1080(V) pixels), with a built-in ATSC/Clear QAM digital tuner. The contrast ratiois an impressively high 25,000:1 benefiting picture quality with more detail in very dark or bright scenes. The Energy Star compliance offers considerable power savings and is worth considering in a purchasing decision.

The fast 5ms response time of these Samsung LCDs will be appreciated by those who wish to use them for gaming. It reduces the likelihood of any annoying motion blur which LCD panels are suspect to. Samsung’s Super Patterned Vertical Alignment (SPVA) panel provides an excellent 178 degree viewing angle.

Samsung’s Series 7 1080p Full HD LCD HDTVs share the same specification as Samsung’s Series 6 with the addition of DLNA certification.

Samsungs LCD HDTV Series 6 has three models, the 40 inch LN40A650, 46 inch LN46A650 and 52 inch LN52A650. All are full high definition, 1080p (1920(H) x 1080(V) pixels), with a built-in ATSC/Clear QAM digital tuner. The ultra clear panel used by Samsung enhances contrast which actually an exceptionally high 50,000:1 benefiting picture quality with more detail in very dark or bright scenes. The energy efficiency of these new models is also worth considering in a purchasing decision.

Samsung’s Series 6 LCD HDTVs (end with A650) have a distinctive red translucent tint to the glossy black frame which is most pronounced in the bezel. Samsung call it “Touch of Color”. The series 6 models need to be viewed in person to gain a reasonable appreciation of their color and styling. The red tint is a brave marketing feature but, the image quality alone should sell this HDTV as evidenced by its best seller status. For convenient viewing alignment adjustment the screen sits on a swivel pedestal stand.

The Panasonic Viera PZ models are identical to the PX models (TH-42PX80U and 50 inch TH-50PX80U) except for;

• Higher full HD 1080p resolution,
• Higher 20,000:1 contrast ratio and
• An on and off sleep timer.

Naturally dimensions and power consumption also vary.

Both Panasonic Z80U model plasma HDTVs are 720p high definition (1024 x 768 pixels). The attraction of these entry level models to Panasonic’s plasma HDTV range, apart from their lower cost, is the excellent natural contrast ratio of 15,000:1 and the outstanding 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio combined with a plasma panels natural ability to provide excellent image clarity for fast moving action video footage. The Panasonic Viera models are named after their image processor which digitally processes each individual scene for optimum image quality.

A sibling premium Panasonic plasma model, 42 inch TH-42PZ700U was recently announced as a 2008 International CES Best of Innovations Design and Engineering Award honoree in the Video Displays category. Consumer electronics products competing in CES (Consumer Electronics Show) are judged by a pre-eminent panel of independent industrial designers, independent engineers and members of the trade press with the most impressive products in each category are selected as honorees. Contrast ratio is one of the primary factors for good picture quality and these plasma televisions deliver an impressive 15,000:1. The Samsung HP-T5064 and HP-T4264 720p plasma HDTV are identical in specification to Samsung’s HP-T5054 and HP-T4254 plasmas except for the addition of a USB connection and some minor cosmetic design differences. The USB addition enables viewing of images stored in a camera or on a USB drive. It’s also possible to play mp3s from a player with a USB connector.

The Samsung 54 models, the HP-T5054 and HP-T4254, are excellent value, entry level 720p high definition option for plasma HDTV shoppers. It’s high bestselling status and good user reviews with Amazon point to general agreement. The plasma panel delivers an impressive 15,000:1 contrast ratio and there is a wide range of picture quality enhancement factors. With their Game Mode feature these models have been attractive to gamers.

These latest plasma panels from Samsung have a 60,000 hour rated panel life which is 27 years of life if you are watching for 6 hours every day. An ATSC tuner is integrated for capturing over-the-air digital broadcasts. There is also a good range of connection options including 3x HDMI.
