Tek Guides for Choosing an LCD HDTV
LCD vs Plasma is often the next decision facing consumers who have decided that a flat panel display best suits their needs. Both display technologies have strengths and weakness and selection of plasma or LCD is dependent upon the individual consumer’s needs and preferences. Presently, LCD HDTV have a significant sales lead over plasma HDTV.
LED backlighting technology has numerous advantages over the conventional mercury-arc lamps CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent tube) including blur reduction, higher dynamic contrast ratio, wider color gamut, greater reliability and environmental friendliness.
Faster refresh rates (120Hz, 240Hz and higher) are used by HDTV manufacturers to combat the susceptibility of traditional CCFL fluorescent backlit LCD and LED LCD backlit displays with a 60Hz refresh rate to motion blur. [ motion blur is not a problem for plasma HDTVs ] Motion blur is seen as the streaking of rapidly moving object across a display.
A conventional LCD HDTV displays video at 60Hz and is susceptible to having viewers perceive motion blur when there are fast moving on-objects such as during sports broadcasts or action films. We compare the 120Hz and 240Hz refresh rates offered by LCD manufacturers to reduce blur.
A scanning backlight is a technique used by LCD HDTV manufacturers to reduce motion blur, which LCD HDTVs are susceptible to, when displaying fast on-screen motion. Motion blur is not a problem with plasma TVs. A scanning backlight is commonly used in conjunction with faster refresh rates from frame interpolation.
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is the most popular display technology in the HDTV market. Find out more about how LCD technology works and some of it’s strengths and weaknesses.
For clear action images without motion blurring an LCD display needs a fast response time. It is even more critical for fast motion intensive applications such as gaming.
What do you need to know to decide between Full HD and HD (1080p vs 720p)?
The contrast ratio is the ratio of the luminance of the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black). Contrast ratio is an important factor in producing a high quality image and definitely a point of consideration in the selection of any kind of display device. Generally a picture with a higher contrast ratio is perceived as being sharper. However, contrast ratio should not be your primary criteria.
Why does an LCD display progressively loose brightness, contrast and color saturation the further is is viewed off axis? Do plasma displays suffer the same problem?
