Presently, LCD HDTV have a significant sales lead over plasma HDTV.
Plasma displays are emissive (self illuminating) displays and do not require a backlight. Each pixel contains three sub-pixels (or cells) of microscopic, gas filled, fluorescent lamps in the primary colors red, green and blue (RGB).
There are a many factors which can be considered in determining the optimum viewing distance including pixel size and limits of the human vision system.
The contrast ratio is the ratio of the luminance of the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black). Contrast ratio is an important factor in producing a high quality image and definitely a point of consideration in the selection of any kind of display device. Generally a picture with a higher contrast ratio is perceived as being sharper. However, contrast ratio should not be your primary criteria.
