Tek Guides to Help Choose a Rear Projection HDTV (RPTV)
Digital Light Processing (DLP) projection technology is used for rear projection HDTV and forward projectors. It is based on a DLP microdisplay chip by Texas Instruments which has a surface covered with microscopic actuated mirrors.
Competing technologies, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Digital Light Projection (DLP) have their own strengths and weaknesses which better suit differing consumer circumstances.
High Definition TV (HDTV) technologies have improved dramatically over recent years. Overall, display panels are larger, images are brighter, contrast ratios have soared, viewing angles are wider and pictures are more lifelike thanks wider color gamut light sources becoming available. Flat-panels have become even thinner, as have rear projection TVs, some of which are now [...]
The DLP rainbow effect only occurs in single DMD chip DPL projection systems for front projectors or rear projection HDTV.
BrilliantColor is a Texas Instruments (TI) trademarked technology for DLP DMD chips delivering improved brightness and a wider range of colors.
A lot of recent HDTV advertising has focused on display resolution. But, there is much more to consider in making a purchase as resolution is not the most important factor in selecting a HDTV. In fact, according to the Imaging Science Foundation, a group that consults for home-theater manufacturers and trains professional video calibrators, the most important aspect of picture quality is contrast ratio, followed by color saturation (intensity), and color accuracy. Resolution is actually ranked in fourth position.
The contrast ratio is the ratio of the luminance of the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black). Contrast ratio is an important factor in producing a high quality image and definitely a point of consideration in the selection of any kind of display device. Generally a picture with a higher contrast ratio is perceived as being sharper. However, contrast ratio should not be your primary criteria.
