Mitsubishi 73 inch WD-73734 65 inch WD-65734 and 57 inch WD-57734 1080p DLP HDTV Review

The Mitsubishi 734 series 1080p DLP HDTVs have a mostly common specification with the 733 models. However, Mitsubishi have added to technologies which improve contrast ratio – a primary contributing factor to picture quality.

DarkDetailer – because a DLP rear projection system is used, Mitsubishi have been able to include a dynamic aperture system to control projection lamp brightness and improve the contrast ratio over four times, providing a wider array of colors and shades for more detail (greater depth) particularly in dark scenes.

Mitsubishi 73 inch WD-73733 65 inch WD-65733 and 57 inch WD-57733 1080p DLP HDTV Review

The Mitsubishi Diamond 733 series (73 inch WD-73733 65 inch WD-65733 and 57 inch WD-57733 1080p) DLP HDTVs all offer Full HDTV resolution on a large screen. They have some of the latest HDTV features to future proof them such as x.v.Color support, three 3.1 HDMI connections and the ability to control multiple AV devices from one remote with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) being implemented.

Mitsubishi DLP 6-color Light Engine

The 733 series DLP rear projection HDTVs have a single DMD chip and color wheel configuration. The Digital Micro Device (DMD) chips have over 2 million microscopic tilting mirrors on each chip for controlling the light to each of the over 2 million pixels required for 1080p high definition. Drawing on Texas Instruments BrilliantColor technology, Mitsubishi have implemented a color wheel which includes yellow, cyan and magenta as well as the conventional mix of red, green and blue. With the wider color palette to work with, the 733 models are able to produce whiter whites and a wider range of colors for more vibrant and life-like images. Brightness levels are some 50% higher than for traditional three-color projection units. (read more..)

Samsung HL-T6189S, HL-T5689S and HL5089 LED Backlit Slim DLP HDTV with Bluetooth Review

All 89S models have identical specifications to the 87S series apart from the addition of Bluetooth. Bluetooth allows users to connect a Bluetooth headset which might be one of Samsung’s range including the recent WEP500 (one of the smallest available today) and the WEP420, WEP410 and WEP210.

Samsung 61 inch HL-T6189S Slim Depth 1080p DLP HDTV

A small specification difference with the HL5089 model is that unlike the other 89S models it has HDMI at rear. It is however, missing the rear PC input (D-sub).

Samsung 61 inch HL-T6176, 56 inch HL-T5676 and 50 inch HL-T5076 Slim Depth 1080p DLP HDTV Review

Samsung’s 76 model range (61 inch HLT6176, 56 inch HLT5676 and 50 inch HLT5076) are attractively priced DLP rear projection DLP full HD (1080p) televisions which feature a clean modern style with a thin 0.8 inch bezel and remarkably slim depth suitable for shelf or wall mounting. Other headline features are the inclusion of SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound, built-in NTSC/ ATSC/ Clear QAM tuners, Game Mode, PC input, USB (digital photo display), three HDMI connections and single remote control over other digital devices. Contrast ratio is a significant factor contributing toward picture quality and all the models in the 76 series have an excellent 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

3-D DLP

Samsung’s 76 series DLP RPTVs full HD (1080P) resolution is powered by a Texas Instruments’ 1080P DLP chip. The chip used has over 2 million microscopic tilting mirrors for controlling the light to each of the over 2 million pixels required for 1080p high definition.

Samsung HL-T6187S, HL-T5687S and HL-T5087S 1080p LED Backlight Slim DLP HDTV Review

Samsung’s 1080p, Slim DLP Full high definition TVs, the 61 inch HL-T6187S, 56 inch HL-T5687S and 50 inch HL-T5087S all feature a PhlatLight PT120 chipset specifically designed by the patent holder, Luminus Devices, for use with a Texas Instruments xHD5 1080p DLP chipset. The red, green and blue LEDs replace the traditional UHP or arc lamp found in most rear projection televisions (RPTV). They also replace the color wheel of single DLP RTPV removing the source of potential rainbow effect problems with this design.

Samsung HL-T5087S RPTV

LED lighting has numerous advantages over conventional RPTV lighting including;

  • blur reduction (LEDs cycle at 2.9kH – 48 times faster than traditional television frame rates),
  • excellent brightness,
  • improved contrast ratio (10,000:1),
  • larger color gamut (up to 114% of the NTSC standards) for more lifelike images,
  • improved reliability with longer life promising to reduce projection lamp replacement fourfold,
  • instant picture at full brightness – no warm up time required for LED as with projection bulbs,
  • lower power consumption (60%) and
  • environmental benefits (RoHS compliant).

Mitsubishi Diamond DLP HDTVs - 57 inch WD-57831, 65 inch WD-65831 and 73 inch WD-73831 - Review

Mitsubishi’s series 831 Diamond DLP HDTVs are attractive looking rear projection TVs with a wide range of features. Of note is the effort Mitsubishi have made to simplify set up and operation. All of the 831 series are Digital Cable Ready with a CableCARD slot and TV Guide On Screen. If you like to “set and forget” then you will like the fact that Mitsubishi provides individual customization for each video input source including color temperature, contrast and brightness. So, you don’t have to readjust every time you switch video sources. It’s also possible to save customizations for the three Day or Night modes. The 831 series come with two remotes – one fully illuminated which will control up to five devices attached to the Diamond TV and one simple remote.

Recommendations are something everyone looks for when making a purchase so it’s worth considering that Mitsubishi won this year’s Gold Award in Pacific Media Associates - North American Dealers Awards. Each year Pacific Media Associates conduct a survey of North American Dealers to rate large screen display manufacturers. The survey requires each dealer to rate each manufacturer on a broad range of relevant factors including products, marketing support, after-sale support, on-time delivery and end-user support. Some 25 different factors are rated and combined for an overall composite rating for each manufacturer.

Mitsubishi Diamond 57 inch WD-57833, 65 inch WD-65833 and 73 inch WD-73833 DLP HDTVs - Review

One distinct impression gained from reviewing the Mitsubishi Diamond 833 series (57 inch WD-57833, 65 inch WD-65833 and 73 inch WD-73833) DLP HDTVs is that they offer a fairly future proof purchase with features such as x.v.Color support, 3D support and the latest 3.1 HDMI connections with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) implemented. From a less technical, but practical, point of view one should consider that all three 833 series models share Mitsubishi’s super Thin Frame which is at least 25 percent less deep than previous models and can make positioning a larger screen HDTV easier.

JVC’s HD-58S998 and HD-65S998 Ultra SLIM True 1080p HD-ILA (Direct-Drive Image Light Amplifier) rear projections have a reduced depth compared to conventional rear projection televisions. Sony and Samsung have also been working on new slimmer rear projection televisions however, with a 40% reduction in depth, JVC’s Ultra Slim HD-ILA models are the slimmest. Both the HD-58S998 and HD-65S998 are slim enough that JVC offer a wall mounting bracket (TS-CP01WG).

Triple D-ILA (LCOS) Microdisplay Panel Design

JVC’s HD-58S998 and HD-65S998 rear projection televisions incorporate a 3 microdisplay panel design intended to eliminate the color separation and “rainbow” effects found in competing technologies eg.
